Guest Review of the Holiday Inn Vancouver Downtown
June 4, 2011
Spent a week in Vancouver for a conference at the convention center. The
Holiday Inn is about 8-10 blocks (~15 minutes walk) from the harbour and
convention, so not right nearby but not too far.
I had a room on the third floor. The bed was very comfortable and room
was really spacious - perfect for business where you just want to unpack
everything. Free wireless is definitely a plus and the room servicing
was good.
The bathroom was a little cramped by had a fabulous, instantly hot
shower.
Some people might find the rooms a little dated, but I thought it was
ok. I was a little surprised to be able to pretty clearly hear people in
the next room - particularly in the bathroom or when lying in bed.
Fortunately my neighbours weren't TOO noisy so it didn't pose a problem.
I was also a bit surprised to find a note above the room fan system (no
a/c) saying something to the effect of 'open the window if it's too
warm'.
Still, a very reliable stay, friendly staff and comfortable night of
sleeping. No complaints.

Caught the Canada Line from the airport to
City
Centre Station northbound
on the Canada line - very easy, and then a 10 min walk to the hotel.
Slightly disappointed that our room wasn't ready at 3pm, but went for a
nice coffee at a nearby Waves coffee bar. As a Priority Club Member, we
were given an upgrade to a suite. The room was huge, but the sitting
room part of it didn't have windows so we mainly used it as a storage
area. All other amenities were exactly as one would expect, including a
proper kettle, iron and ironing board. Wireless internet access was
free. Had a look at the pool, but didn't find it attractive; it seemed
to have been tucked away in a distant corner and was very small. We were
very close to the seafront, having easy access to
False Creek and the
Stanley Park Seawall walkway which goes all the way around Stanley Park. We walked to
Granville
Island but caught the little boat back to False Creek. Tickets
for various attractions, including the
Capilano
Suspension Bridge, -to which there's
a free shuttle bus- are cheaper at the Visitor Information Office at
Canada Place.

Very convenient location. Took the light rail from the airport with
short walk to the hotel. Reasonable walk to downtown.
Staff were excellent, positive and welcoming. The Canadian ladies in
particular in the restaurant were very cheerful despite having a very
busy time at dinner. The food was standard Holiday Inn fare but cooked
with attention to detail.
The room on the top floor was standard Holiday Inn fit out. It was
however good to be able to open windows and let air into the room. One
irritating feature was noise from the lift motors transmitted through
ceiling and wall structure. The noise was quite noticeable despite being
away from the lifts.
As a first for me, I got a room upgrade for being a member of the
Holiday Inn Priority Club. The only Holiday Inn I have stayed at where
the benefits of membership were recognized. It also has free access to
the Internet which is remarkable for a Holiday Inn.

Having stayed at many Holiday Inns (and even Intercontinental) I was
expecting a little more from this hotel, especially since it has the new
"HI" branding. I realize there is only so much a hotel can afford to
renovate at one time, but I do know that certain items (like an old TV)
should not have passed through the brand inspection.
That being said, it is still a very fine hotel, clean and a wonderfully
central location in Downtown Vancouver. Only blocks away from Robson and
many shopping opportunities, as well as the wealth of downtown eateries.
If you're not driving, the buses and SkyTrain are not far away at all.
Staff were friendly, attentive and I always got a smile. Thanks to Candy
in the restaurant as her breakfast service was great.
We did have a rental car, and yes parking is extra, but it's certainly
cheaper than any other locations close by and is quite secure.
We had a king-bed room and were quite comfortable. The wifi can be a
little sketchy in places, but I could always find a spot in the room to
use my laptop. The bathroom was clean, but the tile and bathtub need
updating. Overall there are a lot of areas that are perfectly
serviceable/clean/comfortable - but need updating to the new "HI"
standards. One would think they'd have done this in preparation for the
2010 Olympics.
All in all, great value for your money - wonderful location - needs some
updating.
Room Tip: Try to get on floor 5, Howe Street side. |
