Guest Reviews of the Plaza 500 Hotel in Vancouver
Sep 16, 2010
I just returned from a trip out to Vancouver and the Island, nine days
in total, beginning and ending in Vancouver. My first stay was at the
Plaza. I have to say that it was not a pleasant way to start the trip.
Out of the six hotels we stayed at, this was the most expensive both for
room rate and parking fees. It was also the most run down and dirty. The
room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, the carpets were so run down
that I would not walk barefoot on them, the wallpaper in the bathroom
was peeling off in several spots and the fix for the remote control
(which lost its battery cover on the back) was scotch tape! While this
is not the worst hotel I have ever seen, I would just caution everyone
to think of this as a $60-$80/night hotel rather than the $160 we paid
incl parking. If you go in with that expectation, your trip will be
survivable.

Where to start ....don't get fooled by the lobby folks because that's
where it ends. That's if you can find the hotel to see the lobby. A
small brass sign on the canopy is all that identifies this place. The
two signs on the corner of a fairly major intersection were both turned
off or out. Check-in was pleasant enough and as I said the lobby was
impressive. But the dream ended quickly when we stepped on the rickety
elevator, got off to find uneven floors and wrinkled carpets that are
hazardous to walking, and narrow dingy hallways that smell of smoke and
mold. I thought we were in West Hastings.
First night there was a fire across the hall. Don't get me wrong
here,,,I don't blame the hotel for for the people hanging something to
dry on a lamp in the washroom. The smoke and smell from the electrical
fire was terrible and thick. Again not caused by the hotel. I do however
question their concern for customers as not once, either when this
happened or the next day, did someone knock on our door to see if we
were OK or if the smoke was bothering us. Stop drop and roll training in
mind, we put a wet towel across the threshold to keep the smoke out..
Fortunately for the pyromaniacs, they got moved to a different room.
In the hall the next morning as we were leaving for the day, the maid
asked if she could make up our room, We said yes. Upon arriving late
that night, the room was not made up, My wife made the bed so we could
sleep in it (not that we expected them to change the sheets) i called
the front desk to tell them the room had not been made up and requested
fresh towels for the room. They brought us one towel and 2 face clothes
and said that was all they had. The person then questioned our complaint
when he saw that the beds were now made.
Fortunately we left the next day. On checkout, after asking how we
enjoyed our stay and us relaying the above experience, they provided a
$20 credit or one nights parking.
This hotel could be so much better because of access to the Sky Train
and a lot of decent restaurants in the neighborhood. It's unfortunate
that the management of the hotel don't care enough to make it what it
could be.

I usually spend two times a year a few days at the Plaza 500.
Its a great hotel located close to downtown, subway and all the
sightseeing attractions.
The staff is so friendly! And internet is for free now. Thats great too.
Unfortunately they just serve breakfast, no lunch and dinner any more.
I'm already looking forward to my next visit in Vancouver. As always.

This was the worst hotel I've ever stayed at. The hallways had a very
gross smell and when you walked into the room, it didn't stop. The room
was ok. The tv is smaller than a computer screen and we couldnt even
change the channel from the bed. The air conditioner didn't work and you
could hear anything that went on outside the room. We were woken up
early by people walking in and out of their rooms and noises from the
street. When I went to go get ice, I was actually scared walking alone
in the hallway. It was very, very run down and there were water stains
everywhere. We stayed 2 days and spent a fortune plus 20$ a night for
parking.

I appreciate that you have taken the time to share your experience with
trip advisor readers although naturally I知 very disappointed to read
that your experience was so far from what you壇 expected. I encourage
you to contact me directly to speak about your specific experience if
you would like and so that I can follow up and ensure that the
maintenance issues which you mention have been resolved.
We are beginning to make some very significant changes to our property.
These changes will include major improvements to the appearance of the
hotel both inside and out. I知 certainly sorry to hear that you were not
pleased with your recent experience but I hope that you will take
comfort knowing that many changes are on their way and I知 certain that
when they are complete you and other trip advisor readers will be quite
impressed with what you see and experience!

We drove up from Seattle for a short vacation in Vancouver. We walked
into the hotel, without a reservation and we got a nice king room on a
high floor. The view was not towards the mountains but still very nice
and the rooms are huge. The woman at the desk was very helpful and gave
us great recommendations for restaurants within walking distance, as the
hotel restaurant is not open for dinner. Nice place for a quick
vacation, which we definitely keep in mind for the next time.
