Guest Review of the Sandman Suites Vancouver On Davie

I chose this hotel because it was central to most things, and
what a good choice it was :) Checking couldn't have been easier
- everyone was polite and friendly, and we got a room on floor
20. We liked the fact that the room was a suite, so the was a
small area for cooking ie: cooker/fridge/coffee
maker/microwave/dishwasher if you wanted to bring food back, or
make your own. The suite was fairly basic but clean and
comfortable, with a TV in the bedroom and sitting area. We felt
that we didn't need anything more, as the room was more or less
a base, as we were out most of the time exploring Vancouver. We
had complimentary breakfasts in Maxie's restaurant next-door,
which consisted of toast & fruit, or sausages/bacon/hash browns
with tea/coffee/orange juice. There was also complimentary use
of the steam room and gym - I used the eucalyptus steam room a
couple of times, which was very relaxing :) You could also
connect to the wireless internet service for free, using a code
obtained from the front desk. We had a few problems with some
transfers which the holiday company had messed up - they
couldn't do enough to help us on the front desk, and spent quite
some time making phone calls trying to sort it out. They also
had maps of the city, and advice on using the
Skytrain/buses/taxis if you weren't sure. A definite 10/10 for
friendliness and customer service.
Davie has literally hundreds of eateries on it, ranging from
Transylvanian Cakes (yes really !) from Chinese, Mexican, Thai
and Indian; to the usual Burgers, Subway, Denny's, and coffee
houses; so you can't go far wrong at all. There were also
numerous convenience stores, bakeries and grocers if you
preferred to take something back and eat on the balcony..
If you don't walking, you could get to Stanley Park in 10/15
minutes. Downtown / Waterfront was a 15-20 minute walk down
Davie, and left along Granville Street which took you to the
Waterfront via the main shopping areas. Or if you prefer, walk
down Davie to Yaletown/Roundhouse and catch the sky train to the
Waterfront which was $3.75 single.

It was our first time in Vancouver--such a friendly city--a
stark contrast to Montreal. Perhaps it is because there are so
many gay men in the area, but we had a great time in this
welcoming city and enjoyed our stay at the Sandman Suites on
Davie. We found the room to be quite large--which contradicts
what others have written. Our room did have hardwood floors. We
had a view of the city and of the bay. The hotel uses
cruelty-free bath products, which is much appreciated (most bar
soaps contain tallow which is animal fat--no thanks). Great
restaurants and bars within walking distance. The washing
machine is a bonus, but be forewarned that a load takes four
hours, and there is safety timer on the dryer, so you cannot
open the door for ten minutes after your clothes are dry which
=wrinkles. Also--did not hear any noise from other guests while
in our room--this is important to me as I hate thin hotel walls.

I stayed at Sandman suites on Davie for 11 nights in may 2011.
The first 48 hours didn't go well: the toilet broke twice & the
first full night of sleep to be had after a long flight was
interrupted by the fire alarm & all guests evacuated to the
street in the early hours. There was no information available &
seemingly no staff other than a night porter on duty, although a
guy dressed in flip flops & shorts, named Alex, purported to be
the manager on duty. It's quite scary to meet fireman wielding
axes on the stairwell & difficult to regain sleep when there is
no information or reassurance forthcoming. Apparently though
this was the 2nd incident in 4 days due to 'a problem with the
system'. A written apology to guests was issued next day but no
concession for the inconvenience.
On picking up my bill I find I'm being charged a higher rate
than that quoted at time of booking & as my request for written
confirmation was ignored 3 times I don't have any evidence of
this.

Really nice rooms. A bit small but well equipped. Excellent spa
in the hotel.
If you decide to stay here request a room with hard wood floors
as the carpeted rooms smell bad due to inadequate cleaning.
King size suites are small, cramped but well equipped. Sea view
overlook the parking lot & side street where very noisy garbage
collection takes place at 8am daily.

Davie - Sandman Rocks!
I always enjoy staying at the Sandman. Having a kitchen is
great, the view is fabulous, and neighborhood wonderful! We
stayed in a King Suite this time, which I wouldn't do, since
unless you're really tall, all you need is a queen and the King
just takes away from living room space. The people are always
kind and having a gym is great - thank you!
Area recommendations
Davie is great. The west end is the best end in town! You're
just above the water, a grocery is close, neighborhoods
surround, and restaurants and people affluent - why would you go
anywhere else?
