Review of the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel Vancouver
Nov 22, 2010
The room was quiet, with decent beds. No bedbugs whatsoever. Room was
clean and I even spoke to the friendly maid. I did hear the Karaoke a
bit in the evening, but with the room fan on I didn't even notice. I had
come prepared with earplugs, but never used them. Shower had decent
pressure, plenty of towels and the usual bathroom supplies. With the
curtains drawn room was plenty dark. Never saw people lingering around
the hotel other than those waiting at a bus stop. In fact the first
night there, it snowed and at 2am, there were people playing in the snow
on the street. TV had plenty of channels and the wireless (which you
renew each day using a code from the front desk) worked just fine for
looking things up and checking messages. I didn't do any real downloads,
but for my needs it was fine. Any interactions I had with the staff were
friendly and pleasant. I think people have given this place a bit of a
bum wrap.
This was my experience November of 2010..

The hotel is relatively inexpensive, given that it is very close to
Downtown Vancouver.
You still need to drive. It is about 5-10 minutes to downtown and about
10-15 minutes to Stanley Park.
The hotel staff were very friendly. The overall quality of the room was
acceptable (once again, given the price). The free continental breakfast
(for the first two persons in the room) was just fine. I would consider
going there again and would recommend it.

This is a ok hotel a bit of a walk out of the centre of Vancouver but
there is a great public transport network so don't let that put you off.
The hotel as the title says is a bit dated and could use a re-vamp. The
staff were very helpful and always very polite. You get great service
but a tired hotel. The breakfast was good and thrown in for free.

This place is just downright awful. The pictures are all LYING!!!!
Straight up, go there if your standards are low!! We walked in, took one
look at the place and had to make a quick exit. It looks like a dump and
smells like a dump. All this we learnt at a cost of approx. $125.00. For
first time overnighters in Vancouver who did not know much if anything
about the city it was a terrible experience. I would never recommend
this place to anyone even if you could stay there for free.

Howard Johnson's should be embarrassed that they have their corporate
name on this property. If you are OK with spending $80-90 per night and
getting a sub-standard room that does not look like the pictures, nor
feel safe, nor not looking for edible food, then go ahead and book here.
Doesn't take much to put some $$$ into a property to make to worthwhile,
or remove the pictures showing rooms that don't exist - or there are
only a couple of them.
