Sandman Hotel Downtown Vancouver

Guest Review of the Sandman Hotel Downtown Vancouver

An aging property in need of a comprehensive renovation. We stayed at this hotel on three separate occasions over three weeks as part of a tour. For some reason, the rooms at the front of the hotel don't have a mini refrigerator, while those at the back do. We were on the 4th floor and could not sleep due to the noise from the Nightclub below and the street noise. The windows are double glazed to reduce nosie but we needed to open them to get some fresh air as the rooms had a lingering smell. Bathroom or smokers in a non smoking room? On the 2nd visit they gave us the same room as before, so we asked for a different one and got a much better room on the 6th floor with a fridge and a better bathroom layout. A good sleep was had. On the third visit, again the 4th floor. This time the room hadn't been cleaned properly, (partially consumed drink left on bedside chest and a used diabetes test strip on the floor) the bedside lamp didn't work (broken switch), one of the beds was off its base and the security lock had been removed from the door, wallpaper peeling. The final nail was the drink and ice machines outside the door which sound like they need new motors. After complaining we were given a perfectly good room at the back on the 11th floor. Only negative here was a non working coffee perculator. The elevators are small and very slow, you can wait for 5 mins on the 11th floor and much longer at busy times like the morning.

Not the worst hotel I have stayed in - reserve that for the Sandman in Kelowna. Would not recommend this hotel if you can not walk up stairs as it has the worst lifts. Most of the reception staff were great - with one exception. Very noisy - especially when the Vancouver ice-hockey team are playing at home and tend to have a lot of teenage student groups stay which can be extremely noisy - especially at 3am in the morning. Also the hotel internet was not working when we stayed - very inconvenient!

A friend and I stayed at the downtown Vancouver Sandman Hotel prior to going on a cruise to Alaska. I wasn't sure what to expect after reading the reviews but it was okay. It had a nice lobby, was in a good location for walking to shops and restaurants, and was in a decent neighborhood.
The hotel could definitely use more elevators. There were two for each tower. I believe we stayed in the North Tower and there were couches outside the elevators due to the long wait when it became busy with people checking in/out. In addition, one of the elevators broke and it took forever to wait for one. Luckily they do have stairs.
The hotel had a sports bar (Shark Bar) that served food. However they were charging $6.00 a person the night we stayed since the Canucks were playing in a hockey game that night. It wasn't a home game but rather for people who wanted to watch the game on television. There is also a restaurant, Moxies's Grill, that I will give a separate review on. The hotel also had a pool and whirlpool which neither of us used.
The people checking us in and out were not the friendliest. They did call us a taxi and I was impressed with the speed of their arrival to take us to Canada Place. The hotel did have wireless internet. However, It was constantly busy and I was unable to acquire a network signal at any time. There are two computers available in the lobby which you can pay to use the internet. At the time I got desperate enough to pay to use their computer and internet there were no chairs to sit down on since other customers waiting for a bus or taxi were sitting in them.
Our room was not as bad as I thought it would be. It was roomy enough. It had a flat screen television, separate bath/toilet from the vanity area, and overall it was clean. The room did not have a refrigerator or microwave. It was a basic room with no special frills.
Overall, it was an okay place to stay. We didn't experience bed bugs, loud noise, or a tiny room where you couldn't walk around. The rooms were not what I would consider luxury nor was it a dump! We got what I considered a decent price on the room considering it's in a major city. I honestly have no complaints about it except for not being able to get on the internet.

My wife and I are currently staying in the hotel and Love it! I was very concerned after reading the many articles about the Sandman but was very impressed how the General Mgr Michael Lopez stepped up to the plate to make corrections and answer customer concerns.
The good and bad to this story is the the old tower does show signs of wear. But the new tower is outstanding. All of these newly remodeled room have a European feel and is just as nice as the 5 Star Hyatt room we stayed in last night in Orlando, Florida. They are a bit smaller then the rooms we have stayed at but we still have plenty of room and love the decor. Every thing is clean and so signs of the Bed Bugs we have read about,
Our room was not ready when we arrived early but within 15 min we were sent up. Plus they now have FREE wireless internet a added value.
If you stay here ask for the new tower when you make your reservation. Its a great price for a great room and within walking distance of everything.
