Guest Review of the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel

Had a confirmed room for the North Tower (had been warned about the South Tower
by a review on Trip Advisor...all facilities, restaurants etc are in the North
Tower) When I arrived I was given a South Tower room and told there was nothing
available in the North Tower. The room was cramped, furnishings hideous, the
air-conditioning did not work (it was 80 plus degrees outside ) and I had an
outside view of a demolished building through the window. I was promised/assured
a room change after the first night, but there was no follow through as the
staff had changed shift; the new woman on reception could not have been more
rude. They claimed to have fixed the air-conditioning (in the process breaking
the large mirrored wardrobe door!) but this was not so and, again, I slept only
a few hours because of the heat. I feel sure that I would not have been treated
thus had I been traveling with a male companion; I felt discriminated against
because I was a female
traveling alone.

This was a disappointing experience right from the start. When I was trying to
check in the lady in the front desk told me Sheraton would not accept my credit
card because it was "flat," i.e., the letters and numbers are not raised. I
thought I would just go and stay somewhere else, but then the lady told me my
credit card had already been charged for the room. I felt in a tight situation
and that Sheraton would not care about it. In the end, Sheraton was "gracious"
enough to let me stay in a room I had already paid, by accepting 40 USD as
deposit. What did Sheraton get? A liability insurance worth 40 USD and an upset
customer.
To add insult to injury, EVERY DAY of my stay I had to call the Internet service
technical assistance hotline to help me connect to the wireless network. The
third time I called, I had to even convince the technician on the other side of
the line that I didn't have a network cable in front of me and that I, indeed,
had a wireless signal. When I complained about this with the management of the
hotel their response was "oh, it's a third-party service, we can't do anything
about it." This was the first time I stayed in a Sheraton hotel and hopefully
the last one. The week before I stayed in a Hilton hotel in Washington, DC, and
the experience was the opposite.

Arrived after 8PM and decided to eat in hotel, it was the worst meal I had in
Vancouver. The night before I left was game seven of Hockey play offs with
Chicago, they didn't have a single reservation! Every place else was packed. No
TV in bar area contributes to that. When asked they explained, "That's the way
we want it." Hotel is in center of Vancouver but it's a 15 minute walk to
anything for tourist. Hotel is sold as upscale. I could tell when the water left
in the room was tagged $4.50 if consumed. Don't put out the sign for
conservation not to change the linens, they don't enter the room at all, do not
replace coffee, shampoo, or vacuum. Exterior looks really nice, but they need an
interior decorator. North tower foyer turns into sitting area, then bar, then
restaurant. This area with 12 foot ceilings with no pictures or decorations and
little color made airport waiting rooms look good. The south tower where we
stayed was just as austere. The really good part of the hotel was the best
weight room, pool, and aerobic equipment I have experienced when traveling.

This hotel was chosen because it allowed pets and I wanted to bring my 3.5 pound
Chihuahua. The room was spacious and the hotel was conveniently located but I
found the $33 overnight parking fee excessive. I was also disappointed that
there was nothing in the room for my dog, i.e. bowl, doggy bed, treat or bags. I
had ran out of bags for my dog walk and asked the front desk for one and the
only thing they could provide me was a huge garbage bag. The next morning I was
shocked to receive my bill with a $67.20 charge for my Chihuahua. While I can
appreciate that they may want to allow for an extra 15 minutes for cleaning
(although you would never have known my dog was there) that charge is
unjustified. I have stayed at many nicer hotels, including waterfront, and they
charge much less and always provide pet amenities.

We were able to secure a good price for this room by using price line, otherwise
it would have been above our budget. The rooms are very comfortable and
spacious. We came to Vancouver with extended family and were able to have
adjoining rooms that the kids could go between. Very quiet without too much
street noise. The only draw back was the price for parking. We had a carrier on
top of our car and had to use the valet parking. Parking was $45 dollars a day.
May be a better deal for those who fly into this city. Otherwise, the stay was
great and the staff very friendly. Would stay here again!

Great views and good location for walking to most attractions. We had a suite
(free upgrade as my companions points had expired) that was very large and
comfortable. I am not sure the price we paid would have been worth it if we had
a small room.
Staff were helpful and friendly.

I reviewed this hotel last year as I have stayed here many times and it had
deteriorated. Sadly I feel just as disappointed as last time.
The hotel is clearly trying to save money.
First the pros: my room was clean and well serviced, the bed comfortable and the
staff very pleasant and willing.
The cons: The hotel has no decent restaurant. The Indigo restaurant is closed
permanently it seems, (despite still being advertised on the website). The only
restaurant is the seriously awful Cafe One.
Aircon there is savage (even the table candle flames blow around inside a jar)
and the atmosphere there is more like eating in an office. (There isn't any
atmosphere). The restaurant decor is really dreary and not in the least warm and
welcoming, The food is very average for big money (a $40 steak was well-done
when medium rare was requested) and the vegetables went stone cold on a tepid
plate in the aircon. There was a time when you were welcomed with some nice warm
bread, corn bread and an oil and vinegar dip. Not any more. This explains why it
is mostly empty unless there is a convention in town.
In the rooms, the free wifi is slow and the premium wifi ($18.95 a day) is not
much better. Speed tests show barely a third of the advertised speed. It also
drops the connection (apparently the engineers disconnected the server without
telling anyone) and so you have to sign on again and pay again if you want
premium bandwidth. I use Sheraton frequently, this one is a poor relation.
