Just an OK hotel. Rooms were comfortable but on the smaller side and in
need of an update. The walls were thin and I could hear everything in
the room next door. Check-in and check-out were a bit slow.

The hotel is perfectly located and in walking distance to
Gastown, the
waterfront, the Aqua
Bus ferry to visit
Granville Island
and the bar scene. The
rooms are bit dated, specifically the bathrooms which have only one sink
and little shelving- a little odd for a hotel of this caliber- but it
does fit with its regal image. The beds are simply magnificent, the best
night of sleep I've had in ages. The concierge was most helpful, they
provided good recommendations for dining and we took Mavis out for a
walk. The pool was a bit dirty, could use a cleaning, however it was in
a nice solarium filled with natural light. The hotel had a great jazz
singer in the lounge and there was a handsome group of college students
from Cornell University performing a cappella during our stay- very
enjoyable diversions.

I stayed at this hotel on a Canadian business trip and was pleasantly
surprised.
Unlike many identikit "luxury" business hotels the Fairmont in Vancouver
has genuine character. From the landmark gothic copper roof to the
personable service my stay was very pleasant. Huge bed, great view of
downtown Vancouver, excellent "product" in the bathroom, fluffy towels
and a fantastic concierge who got me the best best car hire deal of my
life. Be sure to check out
www.allure-hotels.com that when looking for the best rate.
On the minus side - an overzealous automated mini-bar (it works on infa-red)
that charges you for moving its contents. More than made up for by the
sweet staff who quickly wiped the 20 mini-bar items off my bill without
a quibble. Also why do hotels charging this much cash begrudge you free
wifi internet? The restaurant was fine but if you want proper style you
might want to look elsewhere.

We had a two night stay at the Fairmont Vancouver in early December.
Both my partner and I are President's Club members, regularly staying in
Fairmont hotels and staying in
Downtown Vancouver in general for business. This
stay was a huge disappointment, and we both vowed never to stay in this
location again (instead we will stick to our usual first choice location
at the Fairmont
Waterfront, or the new
Fairmont Pacific Rimwhich is a great place).
The room was incredibly hot and stuffy, even when we set the temperature
to low, and tried opening the window: unfortunately the windows have
been 'locked' to only open a few inches (apparently the hotel said this
is to stop people throwing things out the window?). In the morning we
called to complain and were told that the thermostat didn't actually
work, as the hotel has an old heating system and can only be set overall
to either hot or cold - not set on an individual room basis.
Consequently, we got virtually no sleep either night. Whilst the hotel
did provide a fan (ineffective) they had no other suggestions and did
not provide complimentary water.
On Saturday night we called and asked to use the complimentary (for
President's Club members) car shuttle: after 5 minutes the concierge
called us back to say that while they had a car available for that
purpose and it was a service they should offer, they didn't have anyone
with a valid driving license available to drive us, adding that this was
a common issue and they rarely had anyone with a driving license. He
instead told us to get a taxi - which is what we had to do.
Finally, when we checked out on Sunday (which we looked forward to
doing) we were told that we should have asked and they would have moved
us to a different room: not helpful as when we asked after the first
night they said there was no point in moving as the whole hotel was on
the same heating system.
Overall, the facilities and moreover the staff were very disappointing
and did not live up to the Fairmont standard.
