Guest Review of the the Coast Vancouver Airport Hotel

July 3, 2011
I found this hotel to be more than acceptable. Quick shuttle on demand
from the airport, even late at night. Two free internet stations, and a
White Spot restaurant on the ground floor. Room was fine, but the area
around the hotel is depressing. I arrived at 2 AM, and left at 11 AM the
next morning, moving to the Hilton which is in a much nicer area. At the
rack rate of $129, I would not be happy, but with my winning bid of $43
on Priceline being 1/3 of that, I felt it was money well spent.

This dates back to Jan 1/2, 2011 while we were in the midst of moving
homes a few blocks from hotel. As party of two parents two teens, asked
for 2 dbls and a cot, $107 plus taxes, "For an extra $10 we'll give you
room 345, the (obviously) bigger room." After restaurant front desk
said, "Wait! for $60 more move rooms; 345 is not big enough." $169 plus
taxes. No thanks. Okay, no cot. Next day cot outside room 338, a smaller
room--I ask cleaning staff, Yes it was in there. I asked manager who
said, "It was not bait-n-switch, it was not price-discrimination" when
they saw our former West Vancouver address.
My take is that if they HAD subsequently discovered it were true (my
hunch is that clerk was told-off then instructed what he wanted done,
micro-managing, taking decision-making authority off of staff) and that
our first room was not big enough for the rollaway, they might've
upgraded us at no further charge (we had already left our stuff in the
bigger "sorry, not big enough," room). I feel it is courtesy, and it
ought to be policy and training to do so. What's more, room rates
weren't posted in the room--isn't there a rule? a law even? although
"in-room massage" rates were posted. I mean, hotels never charge the
posted rates, there's always a reason to tell the client they are
getting some "deal," but I thought that for these very reasons there's a
rule? Guess not.
Without prompting the other customer in line at the desk said, "They
upcharged us too," $45 for parking when travel agent had firmly said it
was included. Outdoor parking for me was $10, though his was in a
parkade.
Last of all, the shower was wimpy pressure, takes four times as long to
have a shower. Having done a road trip to a few other BC towns and
hotels that week, the difference was remarkable.
Convenient to airport, nice that the reliable restaurant is there, it is
our Friday-after-work watering hole, but I give the hotel-part a Fawlty
Towers rating for attempting to renegotiate the contract after the deal
was struck.

My room was clean and comfortable if a bit dated small and stuffy. Some
reviewers comment on the noise from bridge and Marine Drive traffic. Ask
for an inner courtyard room if you want a bit more quiet. Decent
predictable White Spot restaurant. The hotel is convenient to Granville
Street and Oak Street transit and not far from the Canada Line rapid
transit. The Marpole area is pleasant enough for walking around and has
a number of good restaurants and coffee places. The airport shuttle is
also handy. Perhaps best of all is that it is possible to get very good
rates at this hotel through on line brokers, making it something of a
'best buy'.

The hotel is conveniently located and provides free shuttle service to
the airport. Granville Street is also close, in which there are numerous
places to eat sushi. Our room was clean and comfortable and we had no
problems with our stay here. Our room was a bit smaller than what we are
used to in Canada but we had a good night's sleep for very little money. |
