Just a short review of our stay at the Sandman City Center in downtown
Vancouver. The staff was nice, the hotel was clean, but the beds were terrible.
The sheets were so scratchy that I awoke in the morning with what appeared to be
rug burn on my elbows? They were bright red, and so sensitive that my shirt
rubbing on them hurt. The bed was very hard too. The room size was super small
with a bed, desk, table/chairs, TV crammed into it, but I think this is quite
common in downtown hotels in big cities. This is my second stay here, and I will
return, the reason being that the location is unbeatable, and overall is a nice
place to stay for a night (wouldn't stay any longer because of the bed issue).
We went to a hockey game right across the street at GM place. The bar downstairs
is perfect for a few snacks and pre-game drinks, for a fair price.

Reading through the reviews it almost seems that people are talking about a
different hotel. Me and my husband stayed there at the start of October and
found the hotel to be very pleasant. The room was spacious and clean, the bed
was extremely comfortable and the staff were pleasant. The views weren't great,
but hey your in Vancouver, just take a walk around town if you want to see
something nice!
The only slightly annoying thing was the lifts and the stupid security cards you
had to use, which frequently did not work....oh and the noisy ice vending
machine outside our room

The main restaurant was not open for guests. The choices for downtown
restaurants was overpriced with poor service. The hotel staff was friendly and
helpful when asked questions that they could answer or they would direct you to
someone who could answer your question. The rooms are efficient, clean and
comfortable, quiet and we received a good nights rest. They have a separate desk
for excursions and rental vehicles that was manned by very helpful people. If we
return to Vancouver we will request rooms at this hotel again.

Every time we stayed at The Sandman we have had nothing but good service....The
front desk was nice and greeted us with smiles....i would go back there to stay
if i had to.... Good price, good location and good service. A decent hotel and
would stay here again. Nothing special really - but that's not a bad thing!

I was initially worried about staying at the Sandman Hotel Downtown Vancouver,
because of prior, generally negative reviews. But I was pleasantly surprised
when we arrived at the hotel. The decor is appropriate for the hotel style, the
room we stayed in is very clean and all appliances are new and they work! The
room is really small, though, i.e., you had to turn sideways to go from the
bedroom area to the hallway leading to the bathroom, because the desk table was
partly blocking that space. My husband had to muffle the air conditioner because
it was making loud vibration noises. Hotel staff are wonderful, nice people and
always accommodating. The Big Bus, which is one of the tour buses, stops at the
Sandman, and the hotel location is the best! For the amount of money you pay,
staying at the Sandman is one of the best values in town! Just make sure you
don't spend most of your time in the hotel room. Oh - and the elevators! I also
read somewhere that the elevators were slow - like a 20 minute wait. Not during
our stay! In fact, the elevators worked quickly -as long as you got the handle
on using your room key to operate those elevators. I thought the restaurant -
Moxie's Grill - is good, but it's over rated. The food is "just ok." Others like
it, but with what my husband and I ordered, it wasn't as good as we hoped it
would be. My husband and I think we'd stay at the Sandman again, since Vancouver
is just one of the best places to vacation anyway!

When we arrived at the Sandman, there was a fire fighter/police officer
convention going on, the restaurant and surrounding streets were noisy and
crowded. The hotel is attached to restaurants, bars and a public fitness center,
it just felt noisy and very public throughout the open lobby. Now that I think
back on it, the hotel just felt chaotic. Upstairs in the rooms, it was more
quiet. We stayed with family and had 3 rooms amongst us. The room my boyfriend
and I had was cramped-feeling, smelled like smoke, and was dark. Our view was of
the radio station across the street. My mother's room had a great expansive
view, so if you do stay at the Sandman, I would recommend asking for a corner
room facing the stadium! We were within walking distance of Yaletown, which is a
fun area, but we were also close to some seedy sections so just make sure you
know where you're going or drive.

I managed to book this hotel at a reasonable rate but was a bit apprehensive
after reading all the reviews. First thing when I checked in after an over 14
hours flight, lovely Eric at the reception took pity on us and checked us in
straightaway at 10am!
I find him to be more than helpful and ready to help with any questions and will
even tell you which bus to catch as buses in Vancouver is so easy to get around
and cheap.
The location is also so convenient as you can walk to most places of interest

Ideal location at the lower end of Georgia Street, 10 minute walk to China Town
and only 3 or 4 mins more to Gas Town. A 15 minute walk will see you in the
heart of downtown Vancouver. A 10 minute $10 cab ride will see you at the Canada
Place cruise terminal.
Rooms are spacious and comfortable and a decent choice of bars and eateries
within the hotel.
Prices are very reasonable and car parking is underground .

Pros:
- Excellent location for events at GM place / going downtown
- Secure parking ($11 a night)
Cons:
- Window was covered in bird poop
- Carpet between bathroom and bed was soaking wet
- Pigeons created a next in the wall between rooms. Could hear them all night
- Elevators take FOR EVER to get to your floor and when they do you have to pack
in like sardines
- Not worth the price (We paid $200 for 2 people, 1 night) I guess you are
paying for location

The hotel was fine, but we had the tiniest room in the building. (We saw the
floor layout posted in the room) Other than that it was fine. The price was
right and we could walk all over the city. The hotel staff were very
accommodating. Very friendly atmosphere, helpful and professional. Moxie
Restaurant had a good choices of food. Waiters were fast and reliable. I would
definitely come back.

Sandman certainly isn’t top end, and is looking a little shabby, but the staff
were nice, the room was clean, and it was 30 seconds away from the start line of
the Vancouver Marathon (which is why we were there). There are lots of cheap
places to eat on Robson, just a block away. You’re pretty far from English Bay
and the Aquarium, so plan to drive.

Best place to stay for anything going on at GM Place or BC Place. Good night
club, sports bar and restaurant right in the hotel, and a block from events.
Rooms are okay, clean.
