Vancouver was the last stop on our trip through Canada, so we
wanted a luxury hotel. The first night we had a Queen room, the
three nights after a King room. Well, the only difference was
the view. Both rooms were very shabby (old carpet, old dirty
bathroom, old furniture) and very small. The elevators were very
slow, the average waiting-time was 15 minutes. If you're on a
lower level you have to wait even longer: the elevator is very
small and gets fuller by each level. It was by far the worst and
most expensive hotel-experience we'd had in Canada. When the
receptionist asked how our stay was, we said it was a bad value
for money because of the outdated small rooms and the slow
elevator. She said we could expect this because of the summer
season (!!)...

Stayed at Sandman Suites for 5 nights; actual hotel is great and
the Sandman Hotel Staff really helpful.
Unfortunately the staff at the Moxies Bar (where breakfast is
served) are a complete joke. Never in our years of travel have
we come across staff who are unable to actually serve coffee,
juice and toast. Below is an indication of breakfast time:
1) We were given plastic straws to remove tea bags out of the
cup
2) Waited over 40 mins (on two occasions) for toast and fruit
which then had to be sent back once as the toast was stone cold
(think we got someone elses order which was sent back).
3) Over five mornings we witnessed 8 breakfasts being sent back
due to arriving stone cold.
4) 2 customers actually walked out the breakfast room (sick of
waiting)
5) Breakfast staff continuously got orders wrong and far too
slow.
6) Sat for 20 minutes before anyone actually came over to take
our order so eventually asked the guy cleaning the table next to
ours if we could order to then be told he just cleans tables and
our server will be over shortly - after waiting for a further 15
minutes asked another member of staff who eventually gave us a
cup of tea and toast - unfortunately had to ask AGAIN for orange
juice. (this is the norm at Moxies breakfast).
In a nutshell the place is a complete joke at breakfast time -
the Manager should take note and do something about his staff
ASAP.

We found this location and the suite at the Sandman very good
but our 'Complimentary Breakfast' was bizarre. It was described
by Canadian Affair as a full Canadian Breakfast and the voucher
listed most things we would have expected. On our first morning
we discovered that one had to ask for the orange juice as it did
not come automatically - it was eventually produced but had been
quite heavily watered down. Again, no sausages were provided and
when that was questioned we were told that sausages were at the
chef's discretion. Our complaint to the Duty Manager resulted in
our being told that the vouchers provided were out of date. We
asked for and were refused sausages every morning but the last
one. The previous day our server made a right mess of it finally
producing our drinks long after we were finished the rest. As a
token our server promised to get us sausages the next morning
and...... wait for it ..... we got one sausage between us -
sliced along its length!!!
NOT WHAT WE EXPECT FROM A DECENT HOTEL!

We stayed here for 5 nights visiting for a christening. We
wanted to stay in a hotel with kitchen facilities so we could be
more relaxed with our friends and prepare our own breakfasts.
The facilities were very good and included a washer/dryer
machine and fully fitted kitchenette. The bedroom was a bit
small but this was compensated by having lounge area with the
kitchen. The reception staff were generally helpful except for
one female member of staff who was very unhelpful regarding
parking and using the hotel safe.
The hotel is situated in the gay area of Vancouver with lots of
bars, cafes and nightlife. Downtown and Stanley Park are all
walkable. The hotel has its own bar and restaurant but we found
these expensive and a bit run down. There are lots of other
better and cheaper options nearby.
We were on the 15th floor and next to the lift which was quite
noisy during the night. Also the lifts generally took ages to
arrive so this might have contributed to the noise. Our friends
room overlooked a pub which stayed open late and again was
noisy. In fairness they were offered another room but it was
next to the lift so they stayed where they were.
We needed car parking for our last night at the hotel and
thought this was expensive at £16.50. The hotel was okay for
what we wanted but we were left feeling there might have been
other better options available for the £550 we paid |
