I am not sure why this hotel is only #72 of 108. I loved staying there. The
lobby is very nice - clean and airy. The rooms are like little apartments, with
a kitchenette and living room. There is a fridge and microwave, so you can bring
home left overs from some of the great restaurants in the area, or buy fresh
bread and fruit from the market just down the street.
It is walking distance to Stanley Park, and what's even better, you can rent
bikes at a shop near the park and take in the whole park on bicycles. There is a
lot of sidewalk shopping just down the street, and a shopping mall about 6 or 7
blocks down.
My husband and I have stayed there twice, once just the two of us, and another
time with my baby and my mom. Both experiences were great.

We stayed at the Tropicana for 3 nights. It was easy to find on Robson St . We
got a great parking spot right in front of check in and best of all, the parking
spot was FREE. Free!!! That's a good value in a fairly expensive city.
We were able to check right and get our room key to suite 1001- the first suite
on the 10th floor. This faced Robson St which was a blessing and a curse- as I
will explain. You enter into a hallway and on the left is a small bathroom and
bedroom and to the right, a living room and kitchen. It's a smallish apartment
and perfect for 2 people, or a family, for an extended stay. There is a
precariously small balcony facing Robson that we barely dared to step out on (it
was only about 2 feet deep) but the views were great- you could see all the way
to Stanley Park and the mountains beyond.
The bedroom had a queen bed and 2 dressers and a clothes bar (not closet) and
that was literally it. Very sparsely furnished and shabby, old furnishings at
that- but clean. I must emphasize that it was clean. The bathroom was also clean
but small, and the towels weren't great but everything worked fine. The bathroom
came with dishes, utensils, coffeemaker, a fridge and stove- great! The coffee
supplies were refilled every day and the fridge came in handy. The TV got lots
of channels so there was always something to watch. This is the kind of place to
stay if you want to feel like you are living in a city rather than just a guest
in a hotel.
We had a decent stay, nothing spectacular. The rooms could do with an overhaul
of paint and carpet and furniture for sure. It's not for the fussy or picky but
completely fine and functional if you go into it knowing that Vancouver is an
expensive city and for $129 (CAD) we got a bargain.

The location is almost perfect, between the shopping area (about one block
away), English bay and the Stanley park (beach, pool, cycling, rollerblading
...). The one bedroom apartment is simple but clean and large enough for two or
three people. There is no air-conditioning system. The staff is kind, the desk
is open 24/7. So, good quality, great location and average cost.

The location was great. The hotel was aging but still really good for the price.
The room had a kitchenette and a separate sitting/lounge room to the bedroom so
for where it is located, the hotel is ideal for a business traveler staying for
longer than a week.

Like other previous reviewers we really liked the location. Also Carlos in the
lobby was very helpful and nice. However, I guessed the people that stayed in
the room before us had cooked fish, and the smell stayed with us for both days.
Additionally, be aware that while you get a beautiful view the sliding doors
that open to the balconies can be a little bit scary if you have young kids (we
were on the 10th floor). The hotel does not offer the breakfast, so if you are a
family of 4 hungry people, that could become an additional expense, but the room
has a little kitchen, so you can prepare your own food.

We just got back from a five night stay at the Tropicana in lovely Vancouver.
You cannot beat the location of this hotel. Close to everything, no need for
taxis. Right on gorgeous Robson Street where you'd normally spend double the
price on the fancy hotels. Granted this is just a Motor Hotel, so it's not
fancy. If you're fussy, go spend double down the street. But who's in the room
for that long?! Every unit has a living room and separate bedroom. The mattress
was brand new and very comfortable. The views are incredible, watching the
sunset and the action on the street. There is no A/C, but Vancouver doesn't get
that hot. This was an odd weekend weather-wise and it was very warm. But we just
kept the curtains closed and the breeze drifted through the place. It was just
fantastic. The staff are polite, and helpful. There is a pool, however it is in
the basement so it's kind of odd. But it's there to cool you down if you're
warm, then go back out into the gorgeous city and explore. Parking is in the
back for those that drive, and the car will just stay there (safely) as you will
not need to drive. This is our third time back to the Tropicana and it won't be
the last!

Pros: Unbeatable location, all you need is within a walking distance. Staff is
very friendly and ready to assist . Nice suites: one bedroom and sofa-bed in the
living area, kitchen with utensils and fridge. Secured parking.
Cons: Desperately in need for renovation and A/C installation. We stayed there
for one night, but it was HOT night, since rooms gets very warm over the day,
and at night you can not really open the windows because of city noise and luck
on screens/sheers on the window.

WOW. Right in the middle of everything, best price in downtown Vancouver. Free
parking. Sure, the building is a bit dated, and there is no wireless in the
rooms, but still a great bargain.
