Guest Review of the Westin Grand Hotel Vancouver

Disclaimer: I want to say as a precursor to this review that the night I stayed here was booked with travel points. I don't know whether or not this makes a world of difference because it shouldn't--FUN FACT: travel points are often collected by spending money at hotels, so as far as I'm concerned I'm a paying customer and would like to be treated as any other. Long story short, don't spend your points here just in case this is the reason why my stay here was so horrifyingly bad.

My mother and I came to Vancouver for a week and had one night where we planned to stay at the Westin. I am in my twenties and my mother is in her fifties, we are quite well traveled and come from the east coast (where things are faster and seafood tastes cheaper). I'd like to think that we both represent two typical but diverse demographics of patrons at this hotel, and who are not at all picky when it comes to accommodations, as it is said often: nobody travels just to sit in their hotel.

This hotel is well situated, I guess first dibs on the sweet digs is one of the few bonuses to being a part of a multi-billion dollar hotel franchise. The restaurant in the hotel (at least for breakfast), is fine. Service is attentive, blah blah blah you can probably find better brunch somewhere else but it's passable. So yeah that's pretty much where the good ends.

We check in at 9am and are very surprised to be presented with our room key, since we were planning on leaving our bags and checking in at the 3pm check in time (I called the night before, and was told curtly that they were operating at 100% capacity, so : ???)

We get in, and realize that our large window faces into a parking lot underneath and condo windows several meters away, once again, no problem-- Vancouver has nicer views elsewhere.

We requested two double beds and were instead given a single queen sized bed. Once again, no problem--we could just share the bed for a night.

Then we realize something: our room has no chairs. At all. There was literally a bed, a table, and what seemed to be a half completed kitchenette with the doors ripped out. So I call downstairs at around 10am and ask them if it's possible to switch to another room because I figured it's not like my breathing contaminated the living space or anything and I haven't yet removed my pants to wander around the room aimlessly and jump all over the bed. Plus, it was 10am, none of today's new guests have even checked in yet. The gentleman on the other line tells me more or less that it sucks that I'm shafted with this chairless bedlacking room but he can't switch my room because it would be unfair to the other guests who will not be arriving for another 5 hours or so. He reiterates that the hotel is operating at full capacity like I'm supposed to feel sorry that they're making tonnes of money and actually doing their jobs or something.

Fine, whatever so we leave all our stuff in the room and head out for the day. Upon returning to the room we found two chairs set up, which was a nice alternative to sitting on our one queen sized bed. Then we found out that none of the lights work, the room didn't have any sort of garbage bin or soap (no big deal but still come on), and that the fridge was broken and smelled like rotting fish. The 'engineer' who brings us lightbulbs and another fridge to store our now turned milk laughs and tells me that there are 6 other fridges broken downstairs, like it's funny.

Okay so I'll skip to the end, I don't think I would recommend this hotel to anybody. I'm happy that the other people on Tripadvisor have had a good experience here but honestly my experience here was not only the worst out of any other Westin experiences, but even worse than a good handful of hostels in Capetown. Is expecting a Westin hotel room to be ready with a chair and a working lamp too much to ask for? Seriously?

'Service Express' was pretty quick to bring stuff to solve the problem, but I'm here to travel efficiently, not to play build-a-hotel-room and certainly not to spend my entire freaking day pleading politely on the phone like a moron for light bulbs so I can use their 15 dollar a night internet.

One of the best hotel experiences I've had; enjoyed every minute. Staff was amazingly helpful and nice. Room and bed were very comfortable and our views of the city were fantastic. My husband and I walked everywhere and found the location of the hotel to be great...will definitely stay here again!

We stayed here for 2 nights after a 5-day spring skiing trip to Whistler, where we stayed at the excellent Pan Pacific Village Center. After that outstanding experience, the Westin Grand was a bit of a disappointment. The suites (I think all the rooms here are suites) are a good set-up for a family with 2 small kids. We paid $30 on arrival to upgrade from our $289/night suite to a Deluxe suite. It was very small (with the sofa bed pulled out, you really had to squeeze past it), the shower door was poorly fitting (so it leaked a bit) and the AC was very noisy (and wasn't working at all when we first arrived - they fixed it quickly). We were also very near the elevator, the noise of which kept my wife awake.

Having listed all my complaints, I have to say that the staff were very accommodating. Upon our request they moved us to another (slightly larger) suite, and comped us the very good breakfast. The day manager followed up with us to make sure we were satisfied with the new room, and was very apologetic.

All-in-all, not a bad experience, but I just think the hotel is aging and in need of a bit of an upgrade.

From check in to check out, the hotel staff made our trip as comfortable as possible. The room layout was great, as we used the pull out sofa and a crib. The view is great and the city noise wasn't too bad, but there is a fire house nearby. Didn't wake the kids, so it didn't bother me.

We had the buffet breakfast in the lobby each day and found it to be very good with excellent service. Internet was $15/day, but we did the executive room upgrade for $50, which included a room on top floor, daily breakfast, Internet and local calls. For a family of 4, we found it to be a good deal.

My only disappointment, was that the pool was located outside, which I'm sure is fine in the summer, but during our 3 night stay in April, it was a bit brisk outside.
