Guest Reviews of the Holiday Inn Express Vancouver Airport
Sep 11, 2010
We stayed here on our honeymoon as an overnighter to be close to
the airport for the next morning. The room we got was a king,
but it was one of the smallest rooms I've had in awhile. I don't
know the price of comparable rooms in Vancouver, but for the
size it did seem expensive. Everything was very clean, and the
staff was friendly. The bed was ok, but the standard Holiday Inn
Express pillows helped us with a good sleep.
My only real complaint aside from the size is the noise the
shower from other people's room make. And the breakfast bacon.
Whoever buys that for HIE needs to stop, as it's in all the hotels, and its
terrible everywhere

Chose this hotel for the free breakfast, free parking and
reasonable rates (CA$120 +$10 extra person per night). Check-in
and check-out was a breeze. Friendly, helpful staff. My parents
and I shared a 2-queen room for 6 nights. We were in Vancouver
for a family function and sightseeing. We sacrificed great
location for this less expensive alternative. Definitely worth
it as it didn't take long to drive to suburban Vancouver.

The good:
-- Room was big, extremely clean, no weird smells. Spacious
bathroom with a nice long bath - my parents could stretch out
and soak. the shower had strong water pressure and plenty of hot
water. Nice towels - thick and fluffy and not too small, about 2
ft x 4 ft. The coffeemaker made a nice cup of coffee and tasty
tea. Other pluses - free local calls, large screen TV, effective
air-conditioner and each bed had 4 wonder pillows, helpfully
marked 'firm' or 'soft'.
-- It was quiet. We were on the 5th floor facing the Costco lot.
We heard no air traffic, street-level noise or sounds from other
rooms. After checking in, it was 9:30 at night. We walked 2 long
blocks to the Husky gas station mini-mart for snacks since we
had missed dinner. The area felt safe to walk at night, although
it doesn't have much to offer other than the gas Station and
Costco (which turned out to be convenient for flowers, books and
even a wonderful audiologist!)
-- Great breakfast with very wide selection: scrambled eggs or
cheese omelet, bacon and sausage, toasting breads including
English muffins and bagels. Also sweet buns, muffins, 4 kinds of
cereal, instant oatmeal, milk, juice drinks, hot beverages, cold
boiled eggs, nice fruit yogurts and fresh fruit (whole apples
and oranges). Unfortunately you have to arrive early to score a
banana before they run out (More bananas please!). We never had
to wait.

The not-so-good:
-- Biggest complaint was the bed. That's what I'm primarily here
for - a good night's sleep. The mattresses were extremely soft
and I woke with a killer back-ache. (To be fair, my parents had
no problem with the soft mattress.) I mentioned this at the
front desk and they offered to put a board under the mattress.
This helped quite a bit, but still not enough support for my
back. I really think it's time for new mattresses. At least they
could keep a couple of firm ones in storage for people who need
a firmer mattress. A minor issue was there was no place for my
suitcase other than on the arms of the upholstered chair.
-- On our third day all three key cards started not working and
we made repeated trips to the desk to get them reprogrammed.
They finally sent the maintenance guy to see what the heck was
wrong with our lock. After verifying the problem he dismantled
the lock and sort of (not completely) fixed it. We were given
extra Rewards Points as an apology for the hassle, which was
very nice.
-- Security of the ground floor parking garage seems lax. After
seeing police in the garage apparently taking a guest's report I
started parking in the 2nd floor garage which seems more secure.
-- I was disappointed that the hotel charges to use their
computer - I can't remember, about $2-3 per 20 min.
-- One last little issue: I called the desk to ask if they knew
how long the wait at the US border might be around noon. I was
told 5-10 minutes. WRONG. It was more than an hour. Could have
been disastrous as we had a plane to catch in Bellingham. An "I
don't honestly know" would have been far preferable.
Despite these issues, we were very happy. My parents especially
appreciated the large comp breakfast. We'd definitely come back.

We are a family of four stayed here for 3 days in June. The
hotel and the room were very clean. The parking is convenient.
Breakfast was wonderful with eggs, meats, bread/bagel, different
juices, fruits and coffee. Internet was free. Staff was helpful
with travel advise.
