Fairmont Hotel
Vancouver Hotel Description:
- The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver,
originally a four-story, 60-room wooden structure at Georgia and
Granville Street, opened in 1887 to offer guests a fine view of
Burrard Inlet and the North Shore mountains from its verandah.
Vancouver residents thought the Canadian Pacific Railroad was
crazy to build a hotel so far from downtown (then at Hastings and
Water Streets), but the tourist centre prospered with guests
travelling on Canadian Pacific steamships in and out of Vancouver.
In 1995, the Crown granted The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver its own
Heraldic Badge - only the second Canadian hotel to receive such an
honour (The first hotel was The Fairmont Palliser in Calgary). The
Badge contains two main elements. The first is a griffin, the
mythological barkless hound of Zeus with the upper part of an
eagle and lower part of a lion. It is embellished with the wings
of Hermes, the Greek God who is the protector of travellers and
also decorates the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver's front door. Found in
many areas of the hotel, the griffin grips a torch to light the
way. The second part of the badge is a coronet made of dressed
stone to represent the stone of the hotel. Capping the coronet's
merlons are symbols of the modern buildings in Vancouver. The
final symbols on the coronet are two waves, which symbolise the
sea.
