This hotel is very good value, and though even being recently renovated the
furnishings in our room were quite "tired" and dated. Having the little kitchen
in our room was a plus. All in all a great stay until we checked out. The girl
at the front desk seemed not to be interested at all, wasn't the least bit
conversive and reeked of alcohol.

Second time we have stayed at the Helm's Inn. The lobby has recently been
renovated and looks very nice. Coffee and Tea are available all day and "tea" is
at 4:00 p.m. each day - coffee, tea and cookies. Comfortable seating with flat
screen tv and fireplace also in the area so you can meet your fellow travellers.
Suite had a king size bed and fully equipped kitchen. The brochure says all
rooms renovated - did notice laminate flooring and new carpet but otherwise
basically the same, (at least the room we had) but still very nice and
comfortable. A quiet inn and location is so great - I will always stay here, and
the price can't be beat.
Area recommendations
The hotel is located basically across the street from Beacon Hill Park. A nice
stroll across the Park will bring you to Cook Street, which has coffee shops,
pub, restaurants, antique shop etc. James Bay area is interesting with grocery
store, little corner stores, coffees shops and nearby James Bay Tea House. The
Inn is located in an interesting area to walk around and close to Dallas Road by
the sea.
What to pack
Spring seems to be late all over Canada this year, and I am glad I took warm
clothes to Victoria in April. Although it was sunny most days, the wind off the
sea can be very chilly, so take clothes you can layer to keep warm and remove as
it warms up. Victoria is a great place to walk so take comfortable walking
shoes. You will probably need an umbrella at some point during your visit...

Looks like an old place to avoid amid all the new glitz of Victoria, but this
place is great. We had a suite with hardwood floors, a spacious kitchenette,
free parking all within 5 minute walk to the inner harbour. For $89. Sure its
the off season. And this was a basement apartment, but it was excellent. Wished
we could have stayed a week.

While the construction work was disconcerting, it happened only after 8.30 am
and did not run into the evening hours. The location was superb - right behind
the Royal BC Museum - and the room was really nice. The kitchenette was well
equipped - I could have made full meals there if I had wanted to. The people at
the front desk were friendly and helpful. I would absolutely stay there again. |
