Review of the Howard Johnson Hotel Victoria

The room was big and clean. We had the mini suite . We
had a queen size bed fridge, stove, dresser, couch,
table with chair to write letters, tv. The bathroom good
enough size. Tub, shower toilet in one room. Sink
separate with a mirror. My mother in law had the family
suite same as us but had a a separate room with a queen
size bed . The hotel had a pool and sauna which my
husband enjoyed and opened until 9pm. Victoria a clean
and green city. Bus service excellent. you pay 2.50 and
can ride the city bus all day. You can also take a
double decker bus which was fun. We enjoyed the down
town area walking and on a horse drawn carriage you get
alot of information from Robert our horse driver who
works with Black Beauty. The horse was Sauble a nice
white gelding who was very well trained. We went on a
hour tour and reasonably priced. The history in Victoria
was interesting and beautiful. I would highly recommend
this tour. We also went on the whale watching tour with
Orca Spirit. We saw Orcas, Hump back whales and sea
lions. We had a excellent tour guide. We had a boat
where you could sit inside due to the time of year and
my mother in-law being in her late 70's. I would go
again. We went for a wedding and only had 6 days
including our travel days. We also went to fisherman's
wharf and fed the seals and saw floating houses. Our
weather was mild but rain. bring an umbrella and a rain
jacket. The time of year but we expected. The people in
Victoria are very friendly and helpful. You are right on
the ocean and we could of toured more but needed more
time. Alot to see and such a beautiful province. I would
go back. They have nice walking trails. One draw back is
the food is very expensive compared to Ontario. Safe way
grocery store has good prices become a club member. West
jet was great to fly on . There seats are comfortable
and isles wider than some planes I have been on. The
service is good although no meal is supplied. We brought
our own sandwiches. They supply beverages other than
alcohol which you can purchase. They do not take cash,
credit card or coupons you can buy from the airport. I
like the idea that you can get your boarding pass on
line before you get to the airport. You save a lot of
time. I did not like having to pay extra for our baggage
being over weight. In Toronto they weighted our bags
together. My husband and I brought one bag between the
two of us and my mother in law. In Victoria they
weighted it by it self. We paid 51 dollars extra and
only bought one box of chocolate for my mother and a
puzzle. How come such a difference. Next time two
suitcases and two carry ons. We never had this problem
ever and we have travelled every year for the last ten
years. We rented a car from Hertz and they had the best
deal and price. I would recommend them. We also went to
the parliament building downtown and enjoyed this. I
also heard the Butchart gardens are a must see. Anyway
all the locals enjoy living there. A good holiday.

Good value for money. We had the room with kitchenette.
The room was pretty large and had lot of space for my
1.5 year old to roam around. The kitchen utensils were
pretty old. The bed was relaxing.
Pros: Value for money, good location, 1-2 miles away
from downtown, free internet, free parking
Cons: Looks little old.

People need to remember that this is a 2 star hotel, not
the MGM in Las Vegas. My room was somewhat dated and
could use some updated furniture, but what was there was
in good shape and was comfortable. Yes they still have
the old style of TV instead of the new LCD/Plasma but
who cares, it worked fine. The pub food was good, just
again don’t expect a 5 course meal being served by a
waiter wearing white gloves. I found the food and
service to be fine. The pool and change rooms were no
different than any other pool room that I have been in.
Over all everything was good. Just don’t expect more
than you pay for.

We were pleasantly surprised to find we had been
upgraded from a standard promotional room to a suite
that included a full kitchen with stove, refrigerator,
dishes, utensils, etc.
King size bed was comfortable and only a slight noise
level from pub below was present. The free parking and
elevator to the 3rd floor were also very much
appreciated. The staff and especially the manager at
this hotel were friendly, attentive and helpful. I would
stay here again.

We had the full kitchen mini suite. The beds were not
good. Too hard and shakes when one of us turned. The A/C
and the fridge were very loud (we switched off the
fridge during the night....) The furniture was dated as
was the kitchen. No dishwasher, so most pots and pans
were sticky. The bathroom is good.
The location to downtown is OK. it is a 1/2 hr. walk.
The ride to the shopping center and groceries are short.
Staff is friendly no complaints. The bar crowd was
indeed a bit loud (one night).
But in short, will never return due to the uncomfortable
beds (to hard and shaky)

This hotel is in a good location, and the room while
dated is a relatively good value. The problem is having
paid online, the hotel wanted a credit card in the
amount of $100 for any damages etc. I expressed my
qualms in doing this and was told they would make an
exception in my case. Of course, when I contacted
MasterCard, the $100 charge had gone through as
pre-authorization. So, advice is when you book, make
sure you know what this hotel expects you to pay. Be
warned!
