Guest Review of the Marriott Hotel Victoria Inner Harbor
Mar 15, 2011
My wife and I stayed at the hotel the night of Sunday, March 6, 2011. We stayed
in Room 1313 (weird, I know!), which was a king room.
Arrival
We arrived on Vancouver Island via Pacific Coach Lines/BC Ferries. We caught the
PCL Bus at the International Arrivals Area of YVR and the bus took us onto the
BC Ferry at Tsawwassen for the ride to Swartz Bay. Then the PCL Bus took us from
Swartz Bay to their bus terminal at the corner of Belleville Street and Douglas
Street. The hotel is a less than 2 block walk from the bus terminal on Humboldt
Street, so we had a 3 minute walk from the bus terminal to the hotel.
Check In
We arrived at the hotel about 11:30 AM, and had expected to just leave our bags
at the front desk and check out the town. The front desk told us our room was
ready, which was a welcome surprise. We are Platinum Elite, so for our check in
gift we chose 2 sodas, some pretzels, and fruit. Because we got to the our room
so early, when we got to the room we had time to catch up on what was happening
at The Brier before doing some sightseeing!
Room
The room was a standard Marriott king room. It did have an iron/ironing board, a
refrigerator, a large bathroom, and a window that opened. The TV had the
standard local and cable channels, both Canadian (CBC, CTV, etc) and US (mostly
Seattle stations and cable channels).
Dining
The hotel has a steakhouse/seafood restaurant in the lobby. We did not eat in
the restaurant, but the prices seemed reasonable. We did check out the Concierge
Lounge that is open Sunday through Thursday evenings and weekday mornings. In
the evening there is an honor bar and some hot and cold items- enough to make a
meal. In the morning, the breakfast was pretty large, with pancakes, fruit, cold
cuts, eggs, cereal, etc. In the evening we were looking for something
inexpensive for dinner, so we walked about a block to The Old Spaghetti Factory
and had a cheap meal.
Location
The hotel could not be better situated for those on foot in Victoria. It is two
blocks from the Bus Terminal, the Royal BC Museum, and Parliament House. It is 3
blocks from the Harbour Air Terminal/Waterfront.
Check Out
We were staying on points so the stay had no cost, and the check out was a
breeze. We flew Harbour Air back to Richmond so had a 10 minute walk from the
hotel to the sea plane terminal.

The Marriott's I must say have never let us down yet this one is gorgeously
decorated and very cozy indeed. Would Devonshire stay here again and the staff
are so helpful and kind.

I was very impressed with the service at a recent stay here. Everyone from the
check-in clerk to housekeeping was great. The rooms are also quite nice -- even
with city views.

Location is very good for downtown Victoria: 3 minutes to the museum, 2 minutes
to Inner Harbour and Government St, very close to stores, restaurants, etc..
Got a $99 rate via the Marriot web site. We were received in a friendly way; the
hotel receptionist did his job well. Asked for an early check in and that was
not a problem. Our room was clean and comfortable, however was expecting a
“more” modern room (as per the hotel contemporaneous exterior appearance), that
is, the room was somewhat dated; TV from the eighties or nineties, bathroom
however appeared recently renovated. Common areas cozy, nice pool, gym, tried
the breakfast buffet, not cheap at $19 , but good food. The restaurant appeared
understaffed; the host was for a long time our waiter, when our assigned waiter
arrived, we were told that we could order omelettes from the kitchen, but by
that time we had already went twice to the buffet with scramble eggs...Parking
was $16 dollars, reasonable because is very difficult to park in the area. No
valet was available, so we parked the car ourselves.
Will rate the hotel as a 3,5 star., enjoyed the stay, but would not have paid
the rack rate for this hotel. $99 was fair.

I have stayed here a number of times, and although I have no major issues, it is
not my favorite in Victoria. Main issues, is that they don't stand out. Another
hotel in Victoria provides more personal touches, such as complimentary water,
assortment of teas in the lobby, gingerbread men in the lobby (almost Xmas), and
a variety of room layouts. The Marriott is the standard hotel layout, and so you
are always reminded you are staying in a hotel. They need to update their TV's.
Every other place I stay on the Island, including Holiday Inn Express provides
newer widescreen TV's with remotes that work from any angle. No matter which
room I stay in at the Marriott, the remote has to be at a precise angle for it
to work. One other issue for this "business" hotel, wakeup and provide more than
one computer in your business centre - I am always waiting to use. Again even
the Holiday Inn Express in Courtenay provides two computers. On the plus side,
location is fine, rooms are always clean, and staff is helpful, but for the same
price, there are better options based on my needs. I would recommend this hotel,
but again wouldn't be my first choice.
