Booked an $89 premium queen room directly with the
hotel. It included a $20 “Sticky Wicket” restaurant
voucher, and all rooms include a continental breakfast.
The location is 2 blocks from the downtown harbour.
Having it's own pub means you don't have to walk for a
place to party.
Other reviews mention the noise problems, so I asked for
a quiet room when booking. I was booked into room 500,
on the top (5th) floor. I didn't hear pub/bar noise or
street noise. Unfortunately, the rooms have thin walls,
I could hear my neighbors talking and people in the
hallway.
The room was comfortable, probably about 200sq.ft, and
had a TV, telephone, couch, coffee and dinner tables.
The bathroom had a shower over bath. The window has a
view of a building rooftop – the quieter side of the
building I would say.
Other reviewers seem to have exaggerated the parking I
feel. I counted in my head an entire 45 seconds, while
walking from my parked car to the lobby. For some
reason, I didn't have to pay for this either.
All in all, I highly recommend to anyone staying in
Victoria and really wants to see it's downtown. I
wouldn't recommend to light sleepers, or those who don't
want to hear conversations or otherwise, from the
neighboring room.

I got an excellent deal for a 2 night stay through
Booking.com over Halloween. I highly recommend using the
website since even the hotel itself couldn't give the
same deal. I stayed on the 4th floor overlooking the
volleyball court and I had no trouble with any partying
noise. (A rainy Halloween also probably helped)
The room itself was fairly small but the high ceiling
and tall windows kept it from feeling cramped. Bathroom
amenities were a soap dispenser by the sink and
shampoo/shower gel dispenser in the tub. (kind of
smelled like men's cologne) Decor was nice, and there
was a full length mirror as well. Well stocked liquor
store right beside the hotel, where you may obtain free
ice for your room. I also found the bed very
comfortable. Parking is $10 a day paid to the hotel upon
check in. The lot is monitored but make sure you clear
EVERYTHING out of your car since people WILL break in
even for coins.
My only beefs would be:
-upon check in I found the housekeeping kind of sloppy
in places.
- no one sits at the front desk so you have to wait for
them to come out from the back.
-front lobby seems kind of old. Scratched up front door
with an emergency escape-bar for a door handle(?)
-no small fridge inside room.
-no alarm clock (or clock of any kind)
None of those were a big deal to me since you can't beat
the location. A good deal, a decent room and walking
distance to everywhere makes for a good stay.
***Also check out Pig BBQ restaurant on the outside of
the new Atrium on Blanshard. I got take-out from there
and it was great!

This hotel was basic and not a bad stay. The staff are
young but gracious and polite. For the price it is clean
and just what I needed. However if you intend to stay on
the weekend and get a good night's sleep stay elsewhere,
it gets loud on the street all around the hotel as
patrons come and go from the bars.

till 2 am from the noise.

Nicely located, OK rooms but staying on the 5th floor in
August with no AC resulted in and very uncomfortable
stay. Lobby has AC, rooms do not. I was amazed that in
this day a hotel with 100+ rooms did not have AC. Staff
was very friendly.. but the room was average at best and
no AC made them below average.

So imagine you are selected to appear in a National
Lampoon "party movie" where will the casting director
put you? Are you a college kid that will party until 4
in the morning? Or the irritated faculty/neighbor that
have been surrounded by the partying, but yet seem to be
able to do nothing about it?
The answer to that question will probably help you
decide if this hotel is right for you.
If you are an early twenty something college kid,
judging from my stay, it seems like you know this is the
hotel to be at. It overlooks a rooftop bar/dance club.
You can walk home drunk at any hour of the night/early
morning and talk with you buddies about your conquests,
the joint they haven't smoked yet, and about how
absolutely hammered you are. And if you are drunk
enough, when you pass out you won't be bothered by the
constant noise from the bar below. Boy this is the hotel
movies are made of.
If you are not a college kid looking to stay up late and
party. If you get annoyed from the lack of sound
proofing in 100 year old walls, if you get pissed from
the sound of dance music until 2:30 in the morning
coming from a neighboring club, if you don’t like
hearing the exploits of college kids in the room next to
you, IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP, this is probably not the
hotel for you. Despite its price, despite its location.

I stayed at Strathcona in August 2010 while in a
business trip. The night I arrived I left all my luggage
in the room and I went to have a shower, to my surprise
there were hairs in the tub and the shower head was
yellow (should be white). I was really tired and ready
to have a shower so I didn't go that night to the
reception to make a complaint. Next morning I woke up
full of bites, I presumed it was because of bed bugs but
the reception lady checked and she said they were not
bugs in the bed (however i had bites in my legs which is
very unlikely that they were done by mosquitoes). I also
told her the cleaning problem at the shower and she
apologized but did not offer me a new room.
I went to have breakfast (which is given at a pub inside
the hotel) and there was a man cleaning with a very
smelly product. Therefore while I was having a toast
(almost the only thing they offer) I felt I was eating
cleaning products instead of bread due to the strong
smell. The strong smell is noticeable all over the
hotel. So in summary I was quite disappointed with the
hotel, i would not stay again and I would not recommend
it.
