We stayed at the Helm's for 4 nights in early September, 2010. Our room, # 207, was in the building closest to the BC Museum and in the back overlooking the parking lot. We had no view, but also no street noise. It had been recently renovated and we walked into a small kitchen with a granite counter and floor. There was a nice bathroom, a small “great room” with a dining table & a sofa & a LCD TV, and a bedroom with a king bed with another LCD TV. The room was simple, clean, and spacious and we appreciated having a coffeemaker and refrigerator in the room.
The Helm's is very centrally located and within walking distance to all major downtown attractions. The front desk staff were very helpful. While there is no elegant lobby or Continental breakfast included, the relatively inexpensive room price (for Victoria) more than makes up for that. For the location, room amenities, and room price, we will stay at The Helm's next time we are in Victoria!

Located just two blocks from the Fairmont Empress. All the sights of downtown Victoria are within easy walking distance. No elevator, but the room was very spacious and clean. Kitchenette included a coffee & tea setup. Very comfortable bed. It would have been nice if the bathroom was larger, but it was still manageable.

This Inn met all our needs. It is just 100 yds up from the bus station (mind you have to lug your luggage up a hill if you are walking!!). It is central to lots of sights in Victoria, and the reception staff are very helpful and very knowledgeable. Lots of information on display. 5 mins walk to the Museum entrance, or to the main harbour tourist area, which was brilliant. We walked a very enjoyable trail along the harbour and port, to the older fishing port and saw seals happily swimming alongside.
The room was large and good sized bed. Included a kitchen area, with all facilities for self catering....which we did. The decorations of the room (i.e. drapes and bed cover) were a little dark and lifeless, but Hey! we don't stay in the room long enough to be miserable in Victoria. The room overlooked the road, but traffic wasn't a noise problem at night.
Free internet in the lobby, and coffee is supplied all day.
The main downside is no lift, but the reception are geared to help you take your cases up and down..... you just need to ask.

We stayed four nights in a one bedroom 'suite' at the Helm's Inn. It is a great location (unbeatable I would say) and the front desk staff were very friendly. The accommodation was modern and very nice. HOWEVER, upon arrival the floor in our apartment was dirty - despite bringing to the attention of the front desk staff this was not cleaned during our whole stay. Also the bathroom was not cleaned. Disappointing when everything else was so good.

I stayed here for 5 days with my Mom & sister. It is in a great location. The room we had been recently redone with a new kitchen and bathroom. The room was very spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The desk clerk assisted my Mom to take her luggage to the room as we were in a back building. Another clerk gave us great ideas where to eat. Parking was a bit tight the evening we returned late from Butchart gardens. The night security guard assisted us with finding a parking spot, so that didn't become a problem. For the price you can't beat staying here.
Also enjoyed the free coffee and apples when returning in the afternoon.

We booked this inn based on reviews and loved the place. It was very reasonable for a hotel so close to downtown; we walked everywhere. We asked for a quiet room away from the street and got a room looking over the courtyard and it was indeed very quiet. Could see the Empress from our window! The kitchenette was great; made our own breakfast each morning. Front desk area also had great coffee free to take out each morning as we headed off to explore the city.
The staff, especially Marty, provided invaluable information of restaurants and also how to get around the city.
We liked Helm's Inn so much we went back before our return flight to Ontario. We got a different room which was stunning. Huge, very modern (2 tvs!) and once again very reasonably priced.
Will definitely stay at this place the next time we're in Victoria.

Stayed here for two nights in august of 2010. Everything was great, but if you are looking for a modern hotel, stay away from the Helm's Inn. Situated right next to a retiree home, we felt as though the decorator walked out the door and finished up with this hotel. It was comfortable. Don't get me wrong, but I know my grandma would have like it a little more than I did.

Overall, it was good. Free internet, cheap parking fees ($5 a night), centrally located, friendly staff, and generally clean. If you are looking for a modest hotel with all of these attributes, check in to this place.
