Guest Review of Pauls Motor Inn Victoria

We stayed at Paul's Motor in for 2 nights at the end of
a camping and hiking trip through British Columbia. We
splurged a little and got one of the courtyard
rooms--highly recommended. It's a quiet, secluded
outdoor courtyard with tables and comfortable seating.
Great for sitting with a cold drink and a newspaper or
guidebook while your roomy showers. Staff was very
helpful, especially Ryan (I think?), who seemed to
always be there and was unfailingly quick, efficient and
friendly. He revised the date of our booking (we decided
to arrive a day early) quickly over the phone, gave us
great whale-watching tour advice and quickly booked us a
seat (the zodiac is a great way to go). The next
morning, he quickly and politely handled a line-up of
people checking out (which is more than I can say for
some of the guests). The rooms have some funky 1950's
charm which we were happy to see has not been ripped out
in favour of the generic hotel room you see today. Comfy
beds, coffee maker in room, clean, wifi, plenty of
space. A peek into the non-courtyard rooms (fronting
onto a large, free parking lot) showed rooms that seemed
to be more generic and with no courtyard retreat--so not
as nice, but still looked fine for a night or two. Great
location, easy walking distance to Chinatown, downtown
restaurants and the waterfront--and Victoria is
wonderful for walking. Breakfast not included, but
that's okay, there are some fun breakfast places in
Victoria that I am glad we visited (such as John's
Place). Did not try the onsite restaurant --the
waterfront beckoned. Overall, not a fancy place to stay
so don't expect multi-star, but a significant step up
from the typical motel experience, and even more so if
you pay a little extra for a courtyard room

We liked Paul's Motor Inn! It's very conveniently
located and an easy walk to Victoria's Chinatown,
brewpubs, waterfront, and other tourist stuff. Plenty of
free parking. The rooms are not fancy, but clean and
utilitarian, and all with a kind of '60's throwback
feeling. Our reservations were in order, and the staff
was friendly and helpful. No AC in the rooms (but the
windows open the windows if it gets warm. Quiet, only
occasional traffic on the side street. Fairly priced for
the location. Some reviews thought it was located in a
bad part of town and felt unsafe. OK, if your trip is
going to be ruined by a panhandler then you might think
about staying home. I'll stay there the next time I
visit Victoria BC!

The hotel is really a motel but it's clean and
comfortable (in downtown Victoria and you don't need a
car to reach Victoria’s attractions). I suggest booking
a "courtyard room" because it's safe and located in a
nice and separated courtyard. The staff is extremely
kind and available to satisfy all requests. Rooms are
retro (they have a 60’s furnishing) but spacious. If you
drive a car this place is worth it: the parking lot is
free. This is a good two star hotel/motel but I don't
think the rating could be higher than a two stars (I
booked it as a 2 1/2 rating...for this reason my comment
is not 100% positive).

Location, short walk to lots of options. Location is
good, can be noisy, and beds not the most comfortable,
but you get what you pay for. For one or two nights, its
fine, anymore than that, you may want to reconsider.
Great for a no-frills accommodation. The staff were
friendly and courteous. The room was clean and decently
appointed. Absolutely no complaints from us!

Older design with very little in the way of dresser
space or closet space. One wall of room has full length
bench; not sure what its original purpose was, but it
works to set bags, etc. on. That being said, was clean,
well maintained and quiet. Good location for accessing
downtown Victoria and the waterfront. Front desk staff
didn't seem to be as knowledgeable of the local area as
I would have expected, though. I would steer clear of
the attached restaurant, however. We went for dinner on
a weeknight. There were only four other customers in the
restaurant, yet it took nearly a half-hour for our order
to be delivered. Our waitress disappeared for about
twenty minutes midway during our meal. Also, the food
wasn't that great. We did not eat another meal there,
based on this poor experience.

Clean, excellent value for price. Outside room (not in
the courtyard) were not as safe because there was not an
extra security door. We stayed in the courtyard room,
which I highly recommend above a standard room. The
walls are wood paneled and reminded me of being in a
lodge in the woods. The room was clean, the bed was
comfortable, and the bathroom was fine. They even
provided shampoos and conditioners, which was nice
considering it was the cheapest hotel in Victoria. The
adjacent cafe is perfect for families and the food was
really good. The hotel is very conveniently located
(approx. 15 minutes walk from downtown) and the parking
was free. For the price, I'd definitely stay there
again.

By far the least expensive accommodation in an expensive
city - we really enjoyed our stay at Paul's. We upgraded
to the courtyard rooms. It was a negligible amount of
money, definitely worth it for the prettier locale and
greater privacy. I noticed, sneaking a peak as I walked
by the regular rooms, that the duvet is much nicer in
the courtyard rooms. However, the area is so safe and
the decor is still cozy in the regular rooms, so no
worries if you don't upgrade - I'm just saying it is a
nice little extra to stay in the courtyard.
The wood panelling was less cheesy than I had
anticipated, I think because it was real, thick wood and
not cheapy plywood. I also loved the benches lining two
walls - lots of places to put your stuff. The location
was great: about a ten minute walk to downtown, and only
seconds from Chinatown.
The only complaint I would have is that it was HOT - and
I specifically asked the reservationist when I booked
the room if it would be uncomfortable without air
conditioning. The air outside would be 55 degrees and in
the room it was almost 80. Opening the window helped,
but severely reduced the privacy. But again, for the
price...we made it work.
One tip I have is to skip the attached diner for all but
maybe one breakfast. The waitresses, erm, have a lot of
character, and the food has a lot of grease. I'd
recommend going two blocks away to the cheaper and
tastier QV Bakery on 1701 Government Street.
Overall, though, we really enjoyed it. The rooms are
cozy, the staff are genial (but so was everyone in
Victoria, it seemed) and the price, as I may have
mentioned a few dozen times, can't be beat.
