The Huntingdon is conveniently located across the street from the ferry landing.
It has a charming exterior although the entrance is a bit awkward to find. The
main lobby was very elegant and the staff well dressed. Three of us traveled
together and booked a specific suite months in advance which included beds on
two levels so that we could enjoy privacy. When we arrived we were told the room
was not available and we were given a two level suite with beds on the upper
level and a large alcove overlooking the first floor. It housed an old stuffed
sofa, air conditioner and mop bucket. There was no way to get to the second
floor alcove other than ladder, but it was very visible and a real conversation
piece. One of us ended up sleeping on the first floor couch during our stay.
This suite definitely needs to be renovated.
All that said, the suite was clean and the price was good for the excellent
location. The restaurant breakfast was tasty and the waiter was friendly. I
would have highly recommended this hotel if our reservation had been handled
correctly.

After looking at the title, you know what I'm going to be talking about. On
August 18-20th, 2010, room 313 had a HUGE infestation of bed bugs. My partner
got bitten close to 70 times (I stop counting after 70 as I just felt too angry
to continue). The bed bugs got into our luggage and everywhere else. After
reporting it, the only things the hotel was willing to do was to comp our two
nights stay and to pay for dry cleaning. Anything else that was suggested (such
as medical cream for the bites) was rejected and they felt it was not their
responsibility.
The GM of the hotel utter the classic lines:
"I personally only know of one other incident on the first floor, and this is
the first time I heard of anything on the third floor." and "Bed bugs cost us
money, and it cost you money. On our end, we did everything that we could. It is
a major problem in all the hotels in Victoria and we're not the only ones."
Please stay away from this hotel if you don't want to have to throw away your
luggage and clothes.

I'd previously stayed at the more expensive Royal Scot Hotel & Suites just
around the corner to the Huntington and it's true that you get what you pay for.
Saying that, for the price, this place was fine.
It wasn't the best hotel but it was decently furnished, the room was spacious,
clean with 2 comfortable queen sized beds, fully equipped with all the mod cons
and a decent sized bathroom. The decor doesn't exactly set you alight but
considering it was half the price of the other hotel, I feel I had a pretty good
deal and was happy with the overall value for money.
There's secure parking underneath and the location is great; situated right on
the harbour with just a 5-10 minute walk into the centre of everything where
there is a wide selection of shops, restaurants and bars. We didn't eat at the
hotel as there were too many great places down town to try out.
I prefer to spend my time exploring the area than making full use of the hotel
facilities, so found it a decent enough base for a few days, a great location
and good value for money. I booked the hotel through

Although the hotel is in a good location for the harbor and for sightseeing, it
was not the best of places to stay for too long.
I travelled with a friend and we had separate rooms on the 1st and 2nd floor.
All i can say was that the rooms where like night and day in quality. The first
floor room was in need of refurbishment and a thorough clean. Furniture was
broken and walls scuffed. The balcony overlooking the courtyard was covered in
bird droppings and silver fish ran across the floor in the main room. The walls
are paper thin which meant the party in the adjacent room felt like it was in my
room. Every time the door next door slammed my headboard moved.
The second floor room was clean with all the things you'd expect in a hotel
room. It was the sort of room i was expecting, nothing too fancy but clean and
comfortable.
The hotel staff at check in where fine and sorted out the party noise quickly.
The breakfast was okay and the service great.
All i would say is, book this for a short stay but no longer and make sure your
room is not on the 1st floor.

The location of this hotel was nice. The lobby and restaurant nice. But the
rooms are a bit outdated and small. We had a room on the 2nd floor and the
minute we got out of elevator it looked pretty old. The blue steel doors very
outdated. We stayed 2 nights and usually when they clean the room they leave new
soaps and shampoos. Well this hotel did not. I had to call and ask for some as
they took the bar of soap that was in the room. Could not figure out how to use
the air conditioner so just opened a window. That helped as it was a bit stuffy
in there. Since our room overlooked the street, not the harbor we didn't get as
much of a breeze as we could have. People on street a bit noisy but after 11 was
fine. Luckily I don't think we encountered any bed bugs. Its been a week and
nothing has shown up yet. Maybe they fixed this problem (HOPE SO!). The price
was great for Victoria also - most hotels much more expensive in that area - we
wanted place close to ferry since we were not bringing car.
Thing i highly recommend for Victoria - Whale watching cruise with Eagle Wings.
They were awesome and we saw lots of whales - Orcas and gray. Butchart Gardens
was beautiful and the Royal BC Museum was one of the best Museum's I've been to.
I'm not a huge museum person so me liking this one says something. |
