I ran the 2010 Victoria Marathon and this hotel was on the race's list of
recommended hotels. If we'd have been placed on the opposite side of the
building with the queen bed that's listed on our room type, all might have been
well. Sadly, there's a nightclub on the ground floor of the western side of the
building and our room (322), like all others on that side, was directly above
the entrance. The street noise from 11 pm - 3 am kept me wide awake, as did
bumping into my husband in our teeny double bed. This room should NOT have been
rated "queen." BIG problem when running 26.2 miles/42.2 k the following day.
This was unacceptable, especially since the hotel "welcomed" runners. WiFi was
painfully slow at times, but free, which is excellent.
That said, there are positives: the rate was pretty good. The location is
excellent - 10-minute walk to the ferries, walking distance to some great
pubs/restaurants (Swans, Il Terrazzo, Café Brio). The staff was very nice. I
love having a mini 'fridge in-room for beverages/leftovers (that's not stocked
with overpriced snacks).

Best location for the money. Right downtown within walking distance to
everything. We went to Victoria to see Cirque de Soleil and were able to walk to
the Memorial Center from our hotel. No need for taxis or to use your car. The
staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The rooms are a tad on the small
side but are clean, comfortable and have everything you could need.

We had to stay at this hotel with little notice due to an issue with another
hotel we had reserved in.
The staff here were very friendly and accommodating, we unexpectedly had our pet
with us so it was good that this was a pet friendly place.
This is an older hotel that I think had been rebranded a few times. It is very
clean and well run.
The only downsides were that the rooms are smaller than newer hotels (only queen
beds vs, kind sized or two doubles vs. two queens), and that they don't have
onsite parking, so rely on their free valet service. The rooms didn't bother us
as they were very clean and the beds and furnishings were all new. The parking
was only an issue if you forgot something in your car because they lease parking
a couple of blocks away. The valets are very conscious of this because they
reminded us about 5 times to not forget jackets, cel phones, cameras etc.
The restaurant in the lobby was OK, but the location is right downtown so there
is no lack of choice.
This is a great value for a downtown hotel in Victoria and is within easy
walking distance to most attractions.

Good points: dog-friendly, great location, reasonable rates, friendly & helpful
staff
Could improve: small beds - standard room is two doubles; noisy, slow elevator
We stopped in on Friday around lunch time to check dog-friendly room
availability for that night. After a lengthy discussion with the check-in clerk
about the dog policy (can't leave dog in room if you are not there (which is
normal); can't valet your car with dog in the car; nearest parkade two blocks
away). We agreed on a room with 2 Queen beds on the dog-friendly floor, and were
told we could check in after 3 pm. So we went off for lunch. Had an excellent
lunch at Swans, and came back to the hotel at 3 pm. Our 3-year old was more than
ready for his nap!
When we got there we were told that they did not have a dog-friendly room with
Queen beds, only two doubles. My husband and i toss and turn a bit, so really
need a queen bed. Sharing a bed with the 3-year old isn't an option either....he
moves around a lot, and I get kicked, pushed and smothered.....!! The other
option was to take a suite Friday night on one floor (two doubles plus a sofa
bed) then move Saturday to a different floor to the two double bed room. Not
feasible as we had plans for whale watching Saturday AM.
They did offer 40% off the room for the screw-up, so we went with the two double
beds, and survived. By this time, it was 4 pm, so it was a very late nap! The
beds were comfy, just small.
As to the noisy slow elevator, our room was three away from the elevator and we
could hear it go up and down in the night! It was also painfully slow (the
result of the age of the building).
Having said all that - the staff were great (other than the booking screw-up)
and the room was clean but small for two adults, a 3 year old and a large dog!
It would be OK if you were just a couple because of the location, and even
before the 40% discount the rates were reasonable.

Stayed two nights - staff was very friendly and check-in/out was a breeze.
Checked-in early, left our bags in the 'locker' while we toured Victoria; came
back and room was ready. We had a two queen bed suite with kitchenette, sofa,
etc. Very comfortable - the kids could sit on the sofa while watching TV; plenty
of room for the four of us. Very clean. Restaurant was pretty good and you could
charge to your room. All-in-all, a great value, pleasant stay, and close to
everything. The one minor item, our room was closest to Douglas St, a main
thoroughfare - traffic noise was noticeable well into the late evening. Turned
on fan to help drown out.

The Carleton is in the heart of downtown. Rooms are well appointed and very
clean. Parking is by valet only, but usually you walk everywhere from this
location. Complimentary bicycles are available.
