Review of the Strathcona Hotel Victoria
June 7, 2009
I went from Vancouver to Victoria to see the Video Games
Live concert at the Royal Theatre. I needed a place to
stay overnight, since the concert would end at 10:30pm
and the ferries stop running before then (the last ferry
from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen leaves at 9pm). I spent a
few weeks researching the trip over a month in advance,
so I had enough time to find several suitable hotels and
plot out bus and walking routes, as well as calculate
the expenses for the trip.
I wanted the hotel to be within walking distance of the
theatre (which it was: only a block away), as well as a
short walk away from the Inner Harbour (which it also
was: only two or three blocks away). The Strathcona
seemed to offer the best value, especially since it
offered special rates from May to June due to being
under construction. I booked a room for 2 people, with 1
Queen-sized bed and only the minimal amenities, since I
wasn't interested in any frills; this was strictly for
an overnight stay.
Service at the front desk was average; quick, no idle
chatter, not exceptionally friendly, but definitely
efficient. It was especially pointed out to us that this
was an entirely non-smoking hotel, which suited us just
fine. Neither of us smokes, and I would have hated the
smell of any smoke in our room.

The room was reasonably clean and well-maintained, if a
bit old. It was also small, but this didn't matter as we
were there to enjoy the city and the concert, not to be
wowed by a fancy hotel room. Directly in front of the
bed was a wooden cabinet with a large TV and an electric
fan, neither of which we wanted or needed to use.
Strangely, despite our reservation being for two
occupants, there was only one coat hanger in the room,
but we didn't really need it anyway; the two coat hooks
were fine for putting away our jackets, and the small
bench next to it was enough to hold our standard student
backpacks (not those bulky ones used for travelling).
The bathroom had two sets of towels and two clean
glasses wrapped in wax paper packets, as well as a
liquid soap dispenser on the wall. It was fortunate that
we had brought our own toothbrushes and toothpaste, as
there were none provided. The shower was simple and
somewhat cramped.
The check-out time was 11am. Due to being inexplicably
unable to sleep well during the night (probably
irrelevant to the room), I ended up sleeping until
10:57am (missing out on their free Continental
Breakfast, which runs from 7am to 10am). Of course, we
hurried to vacate the room, and got to the front desk at
11:10am . There were no problems, though, and we checked
out with the $100 deposit returned to us and no mention
of our lateness whatsoever.
Overall, I'd say our stay in the hotel was uneventful
and the nighttime noise and light didn't bother us
enough to be a concern. It was a place to stay for the
night before going back to Vancouver the next day, and
I'd say it served that purpose adequately. We picked the
cheapest room package possible, and got exactly what we
needed for our trip.

The hotel and staff get top billing. I hope that they
have continued
success in all their future projects. The new patio is
super! The nightclub is nice especially the dance floor.
I can't say enough about this place. The rooftop is cool
on Sunday nights!!! Popular and lots of good times!

We found the Strathcona to be very well located for all
of the harbor attractions. All of the personnel were
very helpful, courteous and accommodating. The
continental breakfast was fresh and well supplied. Next
time we visit Victoria, the Strathcona is where we plan
to stay. Our sincere thanks to all of the staff. See you
next time.

The Strathcona Hotel is an excellent location and
provides convenient accommodation. This hotel has been a
landmark in Victoria for a long time it is know for its
location and night life.
In the heart of downtown Victoria, within walking
distance to shops, the convention center, attractions
and all inner harbour terminals. The rooms are pretty
standard but are very accommodating but if you are
looking for a little night life this is the place to be. Review of the Strathcona Hotel Victoria

The location was excellent and the restaurants in the
hotel were great! No fan/air conditioning, small spaces,
no WiFi. The location was perfect- right in downtown
Victoria - you can easily walk to all of the main
downtown attractions. The hotel staff was on top of
everything and the hotel restaurants - namely the Sticky
Wicket Pub - still has the best fish and chips we've
ever had. The hotel is a little out of date- there is no
air conditioning and there is no WiFi for the business
travelers. The rooms are a little small, but quite do
able with just 2 people.

We could not have had a nicer stay or a nicer room for
the very reasonable price of 129.00 (plus taxes) per
night (AAA membership special, with 2 queen beds).
Although the room size was cozy, it was not cramped and
we loved the new, firm beds, warm stylish decor, and
beautiful updated bathroom. The only thing better than
the price at this hotel, is the location, which is just
a 10 minute walk from the ferry landing (we took the
Coho from Port Angeles). We did not need to bring our
car over, because everything we wanted to do was a short
walk from our hotel. Royal London Wax Museum was our
favorite (kind of campy, kitschy entertainment - you're
not going to learn anything about the string theory of
the universe). There is also a very nice gallery style
mall 2 blocks from the hotel, which kept my teenager
happy bargain hunting for a couple of hours. For a
really delicious Italian lunch or dinner (or brunch on
Sundays), walk 2 blocks to Pagliacci's. They don't take
reservations (unless your party is 6 or more), so arrive
early ahead of the crowd. It's worth it. The Strathcona
is a great value in a great location -- it's definitely
where we will stay next time we go to Victoria.
