Hotel Review of the Fairmont Hotel Chateau Whistler
Dec 10, 2010
Went to Whistler for one night in mid November for our anniversary.
Originally I had called and booked the "celebration romance" couples
package and it came to around $700 for the one night plus dinner at the
wine room, and 60minute massages for two people. The hotel called me to
let me know they were doing renovations at the wine room, and if it was
ok to switch to the Wildflower restaurant. I said that's fine.
However, after doing some research on their website, I decided to switch
to the "Mount adventure package" which just included room for $250 but
had $100 hotel credit that could be used towards spa, dinner, w.e.
Nov 11th. Remembrance day, left Vancouver around 5, traffic over the
lions gate was decent, couldn't really see much out the sea to sky
highway there because it was raining and was dark out :( Arrived there
around 7pm, couldn't find the hotel with lack of signs so had to call
the hotel for directions. Valeted the car (35 bucks for the night?
ridiculous.) and checked in which was all fairly quick and easy. Room
was nice and clean, everything looked fairly new but I was surprised by
the light switch, which looked like it was at least 50 years old.
Unpacked, and called concierge to make reservation at the wildflower,
but after his suggestion, we decided to go to Araxi (see my review for
Araxi). Went to the bar before dinner, had a drink each, (try their
millionaire leg it's Malibu and pineapple juice. Yum!) After dinner
changed into swimsuit, went down to their pool/hot tub area. It was
great because there was only one other person there and even though it
was freezing cold outside it was still nice (they have hot tub inside as
well).
Woke up early the next morning and went downstairs to the Vida Wellness
spa for our couples massage, they had a promotion going on, buy 60
minutes and get 30 extra minutes free! so we spent 90 minutes getting
relaxed. We asked for extended check out because the massage took halfen
hour longer and it was done with out any hassle. Went back up and
packed, checked out and headed home (stopping at fatburger for lunch)
My only wish was that we stayed another night to sight see! 16 hours was
way too short but boyfriend had to go back to work. Overall, we spent
just as much as we would've if we went with the couples package, but
dinner at Araxi was unbelievable so it was totally worth it! My
experience was good and service was good, nothing memorable but I
definitely recommend it to anyone going up to Whistler!

Having read many of the reviews over the last few months, my wife and I
were starting to think that perhaps we had booked the wrong hotel for
our first trip to Whistler. Well, having arrived yesterday we must say
how pleasantly surprised we are.
Check In - professional and friendly
Room - We are in a basic albeit recently refurbished room. It's
attractive, clean and very comfortable with a king sized bed, seating
area,, large flat screen TV along with plenty of storage for all your
ski gear. We also received a welcoming bottle of wine and strawberries
dipped in chocolate.
Spa - sat in their right now looking out at the ski slopes, the falling
snow and the steam rising from the outdoor hot tubs.
Wireless - I'm getting 10mb download speed in the spa although our
bedroom is slower at around 3mb. However, plug into the rooms Ethernet
port and you'll get fantastic speeds.
Food and drink - only had a breakfast so far at the hotels Portabello's
bakery. 2 x breakfast pizzas (massive) and 2 x large hot chocolates (try
the chilli one with a fresh chill mixed in). Cost - $24. Personally I
think thats great value.
So, if you're heading out to the Fairmont, don't be put off by the
recent negative reviews..... Start to get excited cos I think you're
going to like it.

The hotel itself (lobby and pools) is first rate, and the staff really
try hard to overcome the shortfalls of the property (Brian, Kevin, and
Zoe specifically). Rooms appear out of the 1980s, and there is no excuse
for the lack of TV, music, movie offerings at a hotel of this caliber.
While we met many fine employees, it was usually in a situation where we
were having a problem with some aspect of our stay.
And the food, while very tasty, is just far too expensive to justify in
the bar. $26 for Nachos ?? $24 for a Cheeseburger ?? How hard is it to
put meat and cheese on tortilla chips ? And the lack of Canadian beers
is appalling. Molson only on Sundays...no Labatts, no Moosehead, no
Okanagan ??? We felt trapped a lot.
Presidents Club was / is a joke. NO benefits to speak of, and the
internet only worked when I was in the bar (and I had to get dressed and
go down there from the 8th floor until 2am working 2 nights even thought
the bar closed at 11p - so I couldn't even get a drink or hi-priced
snack). The I.T. guru on the phone offered little help and a chippy
attitude. Cant believe people pay $14 a day to have no connection.
Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay (the staff really were great and
afternoon tea was well worth it - free refills on ALL if you ask), but
would not stay again without serious improvements to all of the above.
Steam rooms, sauna, and outdoor hot tubs were awesome, despite the
inability to get a $7 Kokanee for an hour (twice)

I used to stay here 15 years ago when it was elegant. Now it is...well
not run down but certainly not the elegant place it used to be. I
realize they are renovating but the carpets, drapes, TV from the
80's...The fitness center was so tiny with old and limited equipment
(sorry the mirrors on all the walls only work for people looking in not
for people actually using it). I don't think it is worth the 129/night
special rate. The restaurant was really expensive for lunch. Bare
minimum they should change out the TV's, upgrade the fitness center and
drop the prices in the restaurant while they renovate -a least until
they have a place that is congruent with the cost associated with
staying there. The staff was good but I don't think this is a 4/5 star
place anymore. The 3 large outdoor hot tubs and two pools are amazing -
well the water is -the decks need to be redone as well.

Love to go back later
It was a nice place and the housekeeping almost provide everything such
as adults/children robes, slipper. Last time I missed the High Tea in
Victoria, this time I was so lucky to enjoy the High Tea with my
children. They provide children menu for High Tea. The buffet breakfast
you should not missed it cause I ate lunch at the cafe and the food was
so so. The swimming pool’s water was warm, there were 3 Jacuzzi and had
plenty of room to swim. Self parking was easy and there was underground
parking which you can take the elevator back to the hotel. Newspaper was
in a fancy bag. Only some points has to take out was the fridge lock was
hard to open, dust on the lamp. We request for late check out, the
receptionist said we could stay to use the facility till 2pm and the
parking till 3pm but they needed us to check out the room first which
ended up we have to bring a lot of things to store in the locker at the
Health Club. The hotel did not do a lot of upgrade, only provide better
services. I guess we would go back in the future.. |
