Hotel Review of the Westin
Hotel Whistler
Sep 7, 2010
Just thought I'd drop a few notes about my recent stay at Westin
Whistler with my family on the weekend.
Room - clean.
Service - okay friendly.
Had a bit of an accident. I obviously didn't realize the bottom shelf of
the
in-room mini fridge was indeed a freezer and, in order to make room for
my other drinks, I shuffled around a few things that were already in
there. A glass bottle that got placed on the freezer bursted overnight
and in attempting to clear it, I got a deep cut on my finger from the
broken pieces of glasses. Not most impressing, huh? -:( I ended up
asking housekeeping to clean up the mess which was when they put a
sticker on the freezer noting that it was indeed a freezer. (A bit late
for me I say!)
Shower experience wasn't very pleasant either. The bathtub was clogged.
I was in the shower for about 5 minutes and water level was already
above my ankles. So you can imagine how unpleasant it was to have all
that soap and dirty water left on the feet after a shower. Similar
experience for other family members.

I left a note for housekeeping the next morning to unclog so the second
night wasn't as bad but water drainage was still slow.
Also, the pull plug for the shower was faulty. Every time we tried to
pull the
shower plug which was attached to the faucet, the whole piece would just
fall off. We would then have to try and put it back and it would fall
off again, etc. - we would be spending like a couple minutes every time
before we could actually get the shower to work. I left a note for
housekeeping to get it fixed but repair wasn't done.
Overall, clean room and okay service but certain areas did not meet my
expectations of a "Westin" brand. I have stayed at different types of
accommodations at Whistler eg. Fairmont, Legends, First Tracks Lodge,
Delta Hotel, Whistler Pinnale but, rather disappointingly, can't
conclude that Westin Whistler is a place worth recommending to others.
Subsequent to my letter of complaint to the Westin manager re the above
incidents, I was appalled to see on my credit card statement the $6.12
charge by Westin for
the broken bottle of drink (whatever it was I don’t know as I never even
had a
chance to consume it)! His comment was that I should have called
housekeeping in the first place to get the broken glass mess cleaned up
instead of getting myself injured. Had I known that housekeeping service
at Westin was available 24/7 and that by phoning housekeeping and
alerting everyone at 2 am in the morning about a bursted bottle would
have saved my finger from getting a cut and from now doubting myself for
my “stupidity” of not having done so, I would probably have opted to do
so. Guess I have now in a hard way learned a lesson!
Not happy about the way the complaint was handled! Would definitely NOT
recommend this hotel!

Maybe this Westin works in the winter for skiing, but it was lousy as a
summer resort. This is a small, "pack 'em in tight" kind of hotel. My
husband, teen daughter and I stayed in two rooms over five nights -- the
first two in a regular room (they call them all "suites," but this was
just one small room, with a kitchenette squeezed in). We are all on the
"petite" side, but we had to move sideways in this room, it was so
small. The bathroom was absolutely tiny; you almost had to step over the
toilet to get out of the shower (with its infernal shower curtain). The
last three nights we stayed in a junior suite (when they were able to
give us the Platinum upgrade) -- this was roomier, and the bathroom
larger, although still with only one sink -- did they not get the memo
about luxury hotels having two sinks in junior suites? All the rooms,
though, really need upgrades (theoretically, the place was renovated
around 2007, but it doesn't really look it). The hotel also is not
designed to be a summer resort -- the pool area, for example, is tiny
and pathetic-looking. Westin does know how to do summer resorts in ski
areas -- their new Beaver Creek, Colorado property which we visited last
summer was lovely -- but just do not seem to want to bother with this
one.

I feel that I must respond to a prior comment about this hotel with
regards to families with children. First, unless you and your children
want to swim between the hours of 8-9 am & 9-10pm, the pool is not
off-limits to children. (My 4 and 11 year old are sleeping during that
time in the morning and watching a movie at night. A dedicated two hours
where there are no children is probably a welcome reprieve for many
vacationing couples!)
Back to the review. In brief, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the
Westin in Whistler. Upon check in, we received a coupon for a free
children's movie ($14.99 CAD value!) as part of their Kids Club. We
stayed three nights in a West Tower one bedroom suite. The room was very
accommodating for a family of four: private bedroom with a king bed;
dining table for four; two LCD TVs; larger than average bathroom with a
separate shower and deep tub; and sufficiently equipped kitchen so that
we weren't tied to eating out every night. Looking at the maps of the
rooms, I determined that a traditional room would not accommodate us
comfortably for three days. The extra $$ was worth it!
The fitness area had updated equipment - enough to bust a sweat. The
OUTDOOR pool (the portion of it that was inside was no larger than a
large hot tub, nor deeper than three feet) remained a comfortable
temperature. The two hot tubs were always busy.
We did not experience the spa or restaurant. Instead, we ate around in
town (MUCH cheaper!).
Now for the downside: parking was $28 CAD. Too much IMHO, but you have a
captive audience in Whistler. Not a lot of options for alternative
parking. Our room was behind the stairwell and elevator shaft and we
could hear housekeeping banging around a bit through the closet in the
bedroom in the early morning hours.
Would we stay here again? Yes.

WARNING: this hotel is not for families with young children as many of
the amenities like the pool close for adults only at certain times of
the day, and these times of the day are times that you would be looking
to go swimming with your family.
Some of the staff were rude and had little knowledge when asked a simple
question. But don't get me wrong, this hotel is not all bad... It's in a
great location, the rooms are modern, the lobby is elegant, and well...
That's about it. Sure if your a couple in search of a romantic getaway
this may be exactly what you want but if I could give one tip to
couples, families, or even if your just traveling alone it would be to
keep in mind that there is a four seasons just a short walk down the
road. Overall I would still give this hotel a 7 out of 10 for some of
it's stunning views, the great location, modern and well thought out
rooms and that it is after all a westin. Would I come back? Maybe or
maybe not, because like I said whistler has a wide collection of hotels
and resorts. So keep every piece of this information in mind when
booking your trip to whistler and I'm sure you will have a great time.

This was my first time to Whistler and the Westin hit the mark. I was
there for a conference and a little R&R. I really didn't think I would
do much while I was there but being situated at the base of Whistler
Mountain and being able to hear the Mountain Bikers ride the trail
behind the hotel just seemed to draw me in. After the conference I ended
up trying Downhill Mountain Biking. For service, and location I give the
Westin Whistler two thumbs up.
